A bunch of shows are in Madison this weekend, and I’m having a hard time deciding.
I’m leaning towards Alejandro Escovedo, but haven’t made up my mind.
11/12 – Heartless Bastards – Club Tavern, Middleton
11/12 – Elf Power – Cafe Montmartre, Madison
11/12 – Alejandro Escovedo – High Noon Saloon, Madison
Bob Mould is solo, and I’ve never seen him before. I saw Atmosphere twice last month, so…..

It’d be between the Bastards and Alejandro for me. I’ve seen ‘em both and if you’ve never seen him there’s no doubt Al’s the pick. First of all, he’s been out of action for much of the past 2 years, so getting to see him’s a rarer thing. Second, watching the man go from whisper-soft to a blazing roar on a dime is one of the most beautiful and powerful things I’ve ever seen. He’ll break your heart and rock your head off… sometimes in the same song. He’s touring with a tremendous band and if his guitarist, Jon Dee Graham, doesn’t make your jaw drop at least once I’ll be stunned.
I love the Bastards but it’s Alejandro, hands down. Believe it.

Elf Power? They’re a solid band. But Escovedo is the kind of artist that’ll resonate with you long after the show. Picture the difference between popcorn and great BBQ. Both are enjoyable, but one’s a meal and one’s just snack food. I’ll pay for your ticket if you go to Alejandro and are disappointed…
