Archer Prewitt – Wilderness
In all honesty, this album probably should be ranked higher. I listened to it for weeks and weeks earlier in the year. Then I saw Archer Prewitt at the High Noon Saloon, and was blown away. About a month later I stopped listening to it because I was overwhelmed by all sorts of new releases, and here we are at the end of the year and I’m remembering how important this album was in the beginning of 2005.
For those of you unfamilier with Archer Prewitt, you may be familiar with his guitar work in The Sea and Cake which he was a part of along with Sam Prekop.

Archer Prewitt, guitarist for The Sea And Cake and formerly of The Coctails, returns with his newest and second release for Thrill Jockey. His guitar work is integral to the sound of The Sea And Cake, but on his own work he manages to find a completely different tone and timbre. His voice is a mix of English folk and mid-70’s contemporary AM radio. Think Badfinger mixed with Emmit Rhodes given a fresh breath of air a la Sufjan Stevens. These well-crafted and self-produced songs will stand the test of time.

i’m with you Ryan, this record started out w/ a nice solid spot in my top 10, but has since dropped quite a bit. still a fantastic record tho, and overall i prefer it to Sam Prekop’s latest solo effort (which is great too tho)
