Best of 2005 – #24 – Spoon

Spoon – Gimmie Fiction

I’m sure a lot of readers are familiar with Spoon. I really liked Girls Can Tell, and I think that Gimmie Fiction falls right behind that for me, followed closely by Kill The Moonlight. I was lucky enough to see Spoon twice this year, once at a private party held at the Annex hosted by Jack Daniels and another time at this year’s Vegoose music festival in Las Vegas.

I really like the song ‘My Mathematical Mind;’ it reminds me of my high school days on the math team. Alright, it really doesn’t, but I just wanted everyone to know I was on the math team in high school and got a trophy to prove it.

I can remember the first time I heard Spoon was while I was in San Diego. A couple friends and I went up Interstate 5 to surf and check out the amazing Lou’s Records. They were playing Girls Can Tell in the store, and I asked the guy behind the counter what it was. It was right around the time that ‘Kill The Moonlight’ was released, so he got me to buy both of them. On the way back to San Diego, I watched my friend “Fluff” eat the biggest plate of spaghetti I have ever seen, and it only coast him $3.

What the critics say:

Coke Machine Glow – 91%
Tiny Mix Tapes – 5/5
Metacritic.com – 83/100
Pitchfork – [7.9]

Wow… Gimme Fiction is #24? Now I’m fairly excited to see what’s ranked higher than this…

it’s even lower on my year end list, hehe.

actually my least fave Spoon record after Telephono. it does have some really great tracks though.

seeing them tonight actually, free/private show as well, should be fun.

i’d go with that, def are very consistant. sadly my experiences with them live have been anything but consistant.

that said, last nights show was really great. prolly the best of all the times i’ve seen ‘em.

I’m also antipating seeing what comes in above this album (I suppose you could say I have it ranked a bit higher than that–I only listed a top 20. Hopefully you’ll turn me on to something I’ve missed out on (and there’s no shortage of those).
