Best of 2005 – #23 – Superwolf

Superwolf – Superwolf

“You don’t have the Superwolf album? I’m ashamed of you!”

I was at a bar one night in Milwaukee visiting friends. I had a t-shirt on that led people to believe I was hip to the indie rock scene. This girl kept looking at me, and in fact, she even pointed a few times. Finally, she came over and made it clear that she wasn’t interested in me so much as she was my t-shirt.

We chatted for a bit about albums, and then she said something like, “and of course that Superwolf album is fantastic.” I hadn’t heard of it, but the next day I picked it up at Atomic Records in Milwaukee for my drive back to Madison. The combination of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and Matt Sweeny on an album is a match made in heaven. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like the two of them will be working together anytime soon.

Soft and subtle, Superwolf is the kind of record that unwinds slowly, and is best enjoyed over multiple listens and, unsurprisingly, many glasses of wine. Oldham and Sweeney mew coquettishly, stroking their guitars, cawing bizarre stories about love, death, and body parts: theirs is a rancid and beautiful landscape.
