The Light Footwork – One State Two State

The Light Footwork are in my record collection, and on my Ipod because of Matt at You Ain’t No Picasso. He was the first person to break the news on this band, and I’m really glad he did. I will be the first to admit that I am an album guy. I hate cluttering up my hard drive with one or two songs from albums that I can’t hear all the way through. At the time that Matt wrote about them, I downloaded the tracks and went to their website. They were offering first pressing copy of “On State Two State,” and I quicky purchased one through paypal for a price of $7 (I think).

Before I get into the music, let me just say that I love the cover art for this album, it’s just beautiful. I’ve been considering buying another copy of it, because the initial copies didn’t come with the fancy art work.

I bought a new car about a month ago and there are 4 CD’s that have ever been played in it; The Light Footwork is one of them. A lot of people compare them to Beulah, which is fair, considering The Light Footwork’s very own Jay Underwood toured with the band. For me, I hear a mellower version of the Pixies. Beyond comparisons though, I think this band has to be one of the most underrated of the year with little or no recognition from Pitchfork, Tiny Mix Tapes, or Coke Machine Glow (hint hint).

I knew this band would make my list of top 50 albums of the year, but I never would have guessed that it would make my top 20. Now, I just have to convince the band to make a tour stop in Madison!

What kind of car did you get?

the fact that they’ve been ignored by the national media (pitchfork, etc.) is mind boggling. i don’t get it, and the same can be said for bands like tapes ‘n tapes…their album is great and i don’t think pitchfork ever reviewed it.

yeah, i mean you could attribute it to the fact that neither band are on a known label or anything, but then there’s Clap Your Hands Say Yeah…

i do really like the record, and agree that the artwork is fantastic.

they don’t even come close to holding a candle to Beulah for me however. one of the more criminally overlooked bands in the last 5 years at least.

You raise a good point about them not being on a label. Anyone care to start a label with me?
