The second installment of “Summer Songs” continues with a track brought to you Jason from Audio For Drinking. Enjoy…
Summer Songs – Audio For Drinking – The Zombies – Summertime
George Gershwin’s “Summertime” is one of the most covered songs of all time with an estimated 2,500 versions recorded. Originally composed in 1935, for an opera, it thereafter went on to become a popular jazz standard. It has been recorded by a number of unlikely acts that have completely reinterpreted the tune. My personal favorite version was recorded by the Zombies.
I’m not much of a fan of summer as I hate warm weather. The summer months are reserved for air conditioning, blended drinks and doing as little as possible with calming music in the background. The Zombies version maintains a bit of the songs jazz history and includes their familiar organ-driven backdrop, making the song as restrained, hazy and hip as a humid day in a thousand dollar suit.

Summertime is a great choice and I recommend checking out the Morcheeba version with Hubert Laws off the Gershwin Groove compliation, Skye’s voice was made to sing that song.
