Gave you everything I stole…
Lucero promo3.jpg

On Saturday, I posted information on the upcoming Lucero album, Rebels, Rogues, and Sworn Brothers, due out September 26th. The following day Chris from Gorilla vs. Bear asked me what my favorite album of the year was so far and I told him it was TV on the Radio’s upcoming release, Return to Cookie Mountain. Today I received a promo copy of the aforementioned Lucero album, and I think I may have spoken to soon with regards to my album of the year.

There’s something so identifiable with Lucero’s music for me. I’m not sure if that’s a testament of the good or bad, but I know that each of their albums have been pretty important to me at various stages of my life. So, with the arrival of Rebels, Rogues, and Sworn Brothers, I blew off the afternoon and spent my time listening to the album four times from start to finish. I hear Bruce Springsteen all over this record, and I’m talking the early day’s boss when it seemed like there was such a young urgency in his music. You’ll find that on this record, but you’ll also find a much more polished band as well, complete with keyboards which take Lucero’s music into a very interesting direction. Don’t be worried though, this is still a Lucero record, make no mistake.

Vocally, this album sounds raw and powerful. I could go on and on about how much I am digging this album, but what better way to see for yourself than checking out an MP3. I chose this song because it demonstrates the brilliance and maturity that this record reflects of this band. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Thanks for commenting on my new blog. I’ve been really digging Lucero as well, and can’t wait to hear this new album. They are quickly moving up to one of my favorite bands.

  2. solace Says:

sounding pretty good… a few of the new songs i’ve heard the keyboards took me a by surprise, but you’re totally right, the Boss is ALL over this record influence wise… in a good way.

Trust you guys have listened to Slobberbone. That’s the band I hear when I listen to Lucero. And the new Bottle Rockets records are both worth checking out when you’re in this mode. Looking forward to the new Lucero, thanks for the track.

  4. Eric Grubbs Says:

These guys do a nice torn-up version of Jawbreaker’s “Kiss the Bottle.” Then again, the original was recorded right before Blake had throat surgery . . .

  5. daniel Says:

rocknroll. better than ever. thanks for the music as always.

  6. Annab3lla Says:

Thank you… I can never get enough of anything Lucero touches. I love the new song, and I can’t wait for the new album!

  7. Lola Says:

Hate to say it but I miss the old Lucero. I’ve been a big fan for about 5 years and the new sound is just a little too 1988 New Jersey for me. Not to mention, will someone please tell Ben if he wants to be a singer he is going to have to quit smoking? His voice is shot, it’s getting painful to listen too.

this music always moves mountains. so good.

i like this song. i can see my self at 55 going to a lucero reunited concert and watching an old majestic ben sing this song while old roy , well into his 70’s thrashing the shit out of his drums despite his sore back. and then brian will have glasses 4x as thick as they are now, and john will have white facial hair wet with beer. and the crowd will be full of ugly old people. yeah, man. beer.

  10. Jesse Says:

I hear way more Bob Seger than Bruce on this track which is fine by me, and as far as the vocals are concerned the rasp in Nichols’ voice is what brings unquestionable truth to the lyrics. I think there are few too many frontmen who can convey as much about their music as Ben does. In my opinion there isn’t a band in this genre, past or present, that can hold a candle to Lucero.

Slobberbone & the BR are def great

  12. Angeleyes_619 Says:

The New song is awesome, I can’t wait to hear the rest of it. Lucero is one of the few artist today whose albums can be listened to from start to finish and not be dissappointed with one song, that is truly rare in this day and age.

  13. hooty Says:

I still love his voice, smoke away.

I got turned onto these guys trying to dig up Rob Jungklas at a Mad Jack records site…. had to get the “Tennessee” CD …too great … then found them on http://www.myspace … now I look everywhere for them …I’m hooked…. Told my buddies this guy is the “Tom Petty” for the next 20 years …. one of those guys who I don’t know if they can sing or not…but I love to listen to…
    Thanks …

Damn, i am so jealous of you getting ot preview the new album. How’d you get such a good hookup?

  23. Ward Says:

Predictable in all the right ways, definately some boss in there, the keyboards are a great addition too..can’t wait for the next show.

  24. Ward Says:

To respond about Ben’s voice…to me, self-titled and attic tapes five years ago were quite a bit more gravely than this new track, not to mention less weathered from touring…Sinatra smoked till his dying day, so smoke on Mr Nichols

  25. Tennissippi Says:

    What about lung cancer?

  26. Mer Says:

This song is so good I could sop it up with a biscuit…I find myself secretly waiting for the end of the song when Roy kicks in…can’t wait to hear this live…and the rest of the new album!

  27. Jamie Says:

Ok, you guys don’t know what you are talking about. Ben’s voice is…well, awesome. Can’t wait for the album or for the next time they make it around to Chapel Hill.
