Matt Costa swings through Madison on his latest tour tonight at Club Majestic. Costa released Songs We Sing last year on Brushfire Records and has been steadily touring the world in support of the album. We caught up with him on his way into town for our 5 Questions with Muzzle of Bees feature.
Q. You’ve got a few more dates in the US, including the Austin City Limits Festival later this week. After that you’ve got a European tour and off to Australia for the remainder to the year and beginning of next. How’s the tour going, and are there any places you’re really looking forward to playing?
Tour is going great; this is one of the best tours yet. I’m looking forward to the upcoming Paris show because I have been working on my French.
Q. I caught your performance at Lollapalooza and loved the final song where you brought out Elvis Perkins and his band. How’d that come to be, had you guys played together before?
Yes we toured together through the Eastern US and became good friends. That song (Ms. Magnolia) has kind of become the spirit of our live shows, The Watson Twins and The 88 have joined us on it during our current tour.
Q. Do you have any favorite performances that you caught while at Lollapalooza and are there any bands you’re hoping to see while at Austin City Limits?
Lollapaloooza: Flamming Lips are always good, I also caught Nada Surf.
ACL: Looking forward to seeing Van Morrison, he is one of my all time favorites and I have never seen him play before.
Q. What music keeps you guys company on the road? Any band(s) or albums you care to recommend?
The 88 and The Watson Twins are our tour mates and are great listening, and of course Bob Dylan’s “Blonde on Blonde”.
Q. Songs We Sing has been out for over a year now, any plans to return to the studio after your tour is up? Can fans at your upcoming shows expect to hear any new material you’ve been working on?
Yes, we plan on recording in January. A few pop up during the current tour sets based on my mood.
The show kicks off tonight at 8PM, tickets are $11. You can purchase Matt’s album at Insound for less than $10, and use coupon code ilovesummer10 for a 10% discount!
