the show last night in Minneapolis was just off the hook…

i thought they were good when i saw ‘em 2.5 years ago, but NOTHING like they were last night… wow…

wasn’t that impressed by Grizzly Bear honestly… they were fine, just felt similiar to how i feel about their new record, neither good nor bad, very neutral.

  2. Justin Says:

Man, tonight in Chicago was so hard to choose…

    Secret Machines @ Park West — i’ll be there…
TV on the Radio @ Metro — you’ll be there…
    DJ Shadow @ The Vic — i wish i could be there…

  3. uwmryan Says:

I’d be interested in seeing both SM and DJ Shadow as well.

  4. boo Says:

Solace, you have issues. they were far better than TV last night. Favorite show of the year.

  5. solace Says:

boo, ever hear of personal taste/preference?

i could easily say that if you thought Grizzly Bear were the best show you’ve seen all year, that you need to get out more too, but i won’t because personal taste is just that, your own.

i think i’m at around 65-70 shows so far on the year, and Grizzly Bear would be definitely be towards the bottom 1/3, sorry. not that they were bad, their music just does nothing for me, i’ve tried numerous times, with both this new one and their last record, different strokes…

but i do kinda have to wonder if we saw the same TVoTR set, because saying Grizzly Bear was “far better than TV”? do you honestly think that more than 15-20 people (if that many) out of an entirely overpacked First Ave crowd would agree with you on that? judging by the lukewarm applause GB got at the end of their set, i’d have to disagree.

  6. douglas martin Says:

you won’t be disappointed. it’s arguably one of the best shows i’ve ever seen, and without question the best show i’ve seen this year.

  7. Eric Says:

Lucky ducks… I have class until 9:30 tonight so I can’t make the show. I look forward to the reviews…

  8. boo Says:

lukewarm? you on crack. it seemed like half the crowd was eating it up. I just think Tv on the Radio is too much power chords, too much slow build, too much all tthat stuff

    it was fine and all
    just lacked originality I thought

you definitely were in the wrong part of the crowd if you thought they got a lukewarm reaction because from where I was (in the middle near front)
people were really REALLY into it

and much to my surprise to be honest

like I said, I just wasn’t expecting that at all

  9. solace Says:

i was up top, and could see the entire crowd top and bottom, ok, maybe “lukewarm” was unfair, but they didn’t get all that loud of cheers, nothing even remotely on par w/ TVoTR

my friend who saw GB at the Dinkytowner 2 years ago said they were much much better then, and that he was a bit let down by their performance last night.

and TVOTR lacking originality?? honestly… could you please tell me who they sound like? TVOTR are one of the more original bands around right now. besides, originality only counts so much for me… there’s plenty of original bands that i can’t stand (Animal Collective, Xiu Xiu, Liars (i liked the first record tho, etc.), i need great melodies too, and i guess i just don’t hear too many memorable ones w/ Grizzly Bear. the music is certainly pretty at times.

  10. boo Says:

hmmm. we are on very different pages solace.
To me TV sounds like glorified frat rock for hipsters, it’s fine and all, but it’s kind of neutral, run of the mill power chord rock. It’s fun I guess, but just because they are dancing around, doesn’t equate great songs. Funny, I think we are just complete opposites, b/c I have the same gripe with TV, their tunes are sort MEH to me, like weirdly a bit christian rocky/creedish to me.

I don’t know about Dinkytowner, but I know everyone who I spoke to who saw GB was really impressed. I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

Also, there’s definitely something to be said for seeing a band, when they are headlining their own show and when they are OPENING for another band, especiially a band like TV who is now on a major label and has massive crossover appeal. Naturally more than half the crowd wont know/ or give a shit about the opener, so considering that I was really surprised with how excited everyone seemed about them.

  11. solace Says:

power chord rock? really? not to toot my own horn, but i’ve been playing guitar for going on 18 years now, and not many of TVOTR’s songs have any “power chords” honestly… there’s some pretty intricate & delicate guitar work by Kyp and David. the only song on the new record that is even remotely “power chord rock” is Wolf Like Me.

their great show had nothing to do with them “dancing around”. their show gives me the same feeling as the first time i saw Bad Brains live, albeit not quite as heavy/punk.

    Creedish? Christian Rock? what?

i really have nothing to reply to those 2 comments honestly

so, just to get an idea of where you’re coming from maybe… what are your other favorite albums this year?
