In August I posted on Horse Feathers, a band that has been a nice surprise to us since we first took a listen. After doing some research we found and fell in love with one of their friends bands John Weinland. I’ll admit the name confused me a little thinking it might be that of a singer/songwriter sort, but in fact it’s the name of a group that provides some refreshingly great Neil Young-esque acoustic music. Led by Adam Shearer, John Weinland’s latest release Demersville provides a great addition to anyone’s record collection that’s filled up with Elliot Smith or Granddaddy.
The album was recorded by Norfolk & Western’s very own Adam Selzer, who also makes guest appearances throughout with the assistance of Rachel Blumberg as well. There is some gorgeous piano and slide guitar on this album, especially great on the third track, “Letters.” Lyrically, this album is equally satisfying, “Just because some things end, it doesn’t mean you’re not the world to me. Will I know you again?” This album is so deeply filled from start to finish with brilliant moments that keep me playing it time and time again. For me the stand out track, and it’s hard to pick just one has to be “Other Folks,” a lovers lament to a former love about not regretting time spent during their time together.
I strongly recommend this album; you can point your browser here for a select number of tracks for your listening pleasure. This is one album that I’ll be listening to for years to come.
