Review: Cougar @ The High Noon Saloon

Posted on Wednesday 31 January 2007

strict-scrutiny.jpg

The snow had been accumulating on the streets of Madison for about two hours by the time I made my way to the High Noon Saloon on Monday. I wanted to be out of the house, I needed to see live music, but reservations set in as my all-wheel-drive car had trouble navigating the slippery conditions.

I made it. I was surprised at the crowd, though I shouldn’t have been, Cougar has strong ties to the city of Madison, all the members once called this place home. You may not be familiar, but if instrumental music that bears a strong resemblance (at least to me) to Tortoise and Four Tet is your thing, you’re missing out if you pass on a chance to pick up their fantastic album, Law.

The dark atmosphere, packed with people whose shoes still dripped that mixture of snow and soot onto the floor, was the perfect place to be on Monday night. The crowd, an almost secret society, that consisted of long-time friends and family members of the band watched attentively as Cougar played a consistent mix of old and new tunes. Debuting a new song, “stay famous,” Cougar passed the enthusiasm onstage onto the concertgoers who applauded enthusiastically upon its conclusion.

Trying to write or review about music without words proved less difficult that I expected, yet I won’t be coxcomb and pretend that anything I’ve written could actually come close to how much I enjoyed the show – and that’s why words often fall short of describing such an event. Nonetheless, I found the music to be almost meditative, an easy escape to a work week only eight hours old. Monday night was an experience, not just a concert. It was a memory, a beginning of a tour, and a catapult for a band who’s about to achieve big things.

Thoughts/Reviews? I know you folks were out there.

Madison Concert Announcement: Dean and Britta

Posted on Tuesday 30 January 2007

dean-and-britta.jpg

Dean and Britta are playing the High Noon Saloon on Monday, March 19th.  You may know that Dean and Britta once played in Luna, a band I was infatuated with and adored for about two strong years before their unfortunate dismantle.  All is not lost however, as Dean and Britta emerge next month with Back Numbers, and 11-track offering full of lush, fuzzed out, and gorgeous music guaranteed to make your heart swoon.

We’ve been playing our promo copy to death; look for the record to drop on February 27th.

Madison Concert Announcement: Andrew Bird

Posted on Monday 29 January 2007

Andrew Bird is set to release Armchair Apocrypha on March 20th, his follow up to the fantastic, and MoB favorite, The Mysterious Production of Eggs. You can get a sneak peak at the record by visiting More Cowbell, who has a MP3 of the song “Heretics.”

With that obligatory information out of the way, the real reason for this post was to inform you that Andrew Bird will be playing the Annex on Friday, February 23rd. The Spinto Band will be performing with Dios(Malos) and The Changes. Better get those tickets when they go on sale, ’cause they’ll go fast.

Update: Andrew Bird has no plans of playing in Madison, it was an error on Pollstar. You can still get your Andrew Bird fix when he plays a little further south in Milwaukee at Pitman Theatre on April 21st.

Tonight in Madison: Cougar

Posted on Monday 29 January 2007

If you’re not heading to Chicago to catch M. Ward at Park West tonight, I highly recommend checking out Cougar at the High Noon Saloon. If you dig the music of Four Tet, Tortoise, and Califone I’d say that Cougar’s electro-instrumental music will be right up your alley.

Last year they released Law, which was lauded by the likes of Scissorkick and many others. I had a chance to listen to it a couple more times over the weekend and can attest to the fact that the album is brilliant, and their show tonight is not to be missed.

Madison’s very own, and equally enjoyable band The Bracelets kick things off at 9PM, tickets are $6.

Madison Concert Announcement: Joseph Arthur

Posted on Thursday 25 January 2007

One of my favorite musicians and live performers is Joseph Arthur. Each time I’ve seen him in concert has been an experience that resonates for some time after. At $12, you can’t find a better musician or concert than you’ll get with Joseph Arthur at the High Noon Saloon on April 26th.

Update: Yep, that is the same date as the Ted Leo & The Pharmacists show as well.

Who will you be with tonight?

Posted on Thursday 25 January 2007

Madison peeps have two great options for live music tonight.  Tim O’Reagan of Jayhawks fame plays Cafe Montmartre behind his brilliant self-titled album released in 2006.

Summer Hymns will be at the King Club nearby playing songs in support of their 2006 release Backwards Masks.

Unrelated but must see: You know we love the Badger Basketball team, and you gotta check out this youtube video: Bo Ryan Does The Hambone.

Posted on Tuesday 23 January 2007

After looking over Ryan’s list I noticed a few albums missing that I really loved and feel that I should mention. They were fantastic and on heavy rotation for me for a large portion of the 2006 year. Those albums are:

Destroyer - Destroyer’s Rubies [website | myspace]
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood [website | myspace]
Islands - Return to the Sea [website | myspace]
Grizzly Bear - Yellow House [website | myspace]
The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America [website | myspace]
Phoenix - It’s Never Been Like That [website | myspace]
Midlake - The Trials of Van Occupanther [website | myspace]
The Decemberists - The Crane Wife [website | myspace]
Band of Horses - Everything All the Time [website | myspace]

I hope to be a bit more on top of things next year so that I might actually get a 2006 list produced prior to 2007. In addition, here’s a link to my Best of 2005 list.
