In less than a month all my youth comes catching up to me when Dinosaur Jr. releases their upcoming record, Beyond on May 1st.
I spent a lot of time in the early 90′s just getting to know music as an extension of hearing Pearl Jam and Nirvana for the first time and then trying to figure out what music influenced their sound or other artists going along similar or interesting paths. Dinosaur Jr. was one of those bands.
I can still remember walking into a used record store across the street from my father’s office and picking up You’re Living All Over Me and Without A Sound all but draining me of the lawn mowing fortune I’d managed to accumulate that week at the age of 14, but I was happy and those records were the prize of my then sparse CD collection which at that point was strongly anchored by U2, Duran Duran, REM, and a smattering of Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, and Springsteen tapes.
When word began to circulate that Dinosaur Jr. would be touring together again it quickly flooded me with memories of growing up and then, more recently, I listened to Beyond. It’s pretty easy for me to describe – great rock and roll, amazing guitar work and the opening track, “Almost Ready” already cemented as one of my favorite songs of the year.
Lou Barlow’s back and Beyond is a record that belongs in your collection. Dinosaur Jr. will play a three night stint at the Abbey in Chicago from May 31st – June 2nd.
