It’s easy to forget how hugely popular Milwaukee’s Summerfest is. Last night, with a black sky looming overhead, thousands upon thousands headed to the shores of Lake Michigan (on a Thursday night nonetheless) to drink a lot of beer and enjoy some live music. The rain never materialized, and while we are nursing a couple extra cups of coffee this morning, the festival delivered a great evening of live music.
Spoon was really the only act I had circled in red as a must see at Summerfest this year. I caught the majority of their performance at Bonnaroo last month, but I was looking forward to seeing them again as I’ve really come to like Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, which comes out next week.
According to a very talkative Britt Daniel during the show, this marked the group’s third time in Milwaukee. I can really only remember one other time, but I can say that it’s been pretty neat to watch this group go from playing hundred person venues only two years ago to playing in front of a much larger audience these days.
The set was Ga (x5) heavy, but also had sprinklings of previous albums, including crowd favorites “The Way We Get By” and “I Turn My Camera On.”
Spoon just released the video for “The Underdog”, which you can check out here.

From what I’ve been told, the two Wisconsin shows were at The Cactus Club and The Globe.
You should check out the Old 97′s tomorrow night if your platter isn’t already full.

I was at the show as well and was in the 5th row center. Great time! I definitely enjoyed the show, but felt it was missing a little “texture”. It lacks the punch that Wilco can bring to their live shows.
I was there an hour and a half before it started and had the pleasure of watching one of the most hiliariously shitty bands of all time too.

Spoon was fantastic, despite what the guy from the Journal Sentinel had to say about it…
It’s funny that you mention the opening band, Bluesphee…we had Britt for an interview in the street studio while the opening band was playing, and it kind of turned into a play-by-play of sorts of the dumb things that the opening band were doing…
And nice to meet you, MoB-Ryan. Keep up the great work.
