5 Questions with Brighton, MA

On Thursday, September 6th, Brighton, MA returns to Madison to play an intimate gig at Cafe Montmartre. We caught up with the boys for a quick interview for our ongoing 5 Questions with Muzzle of Bees feature.

Being from Chicago and in close proximity to Madison, had you ever been to the city prior to touring?

We’ve all been up there, some of us had friends who went to school there, and we’ve got a lot more friends since playing in town so many times over the last few years.

Could you lend some information on the recording process of your self-titled EP? Where and how was it recorded, and were there any lessons learned that you’ll apply towards future recording sessions?

We planned the record to reflect as closely as possible our stage sound. To not have overdubs which were so important that they were missed live. We strayed somewhat with some string and keyboard embellishments, but we had to ultimately be realistic about the fact that a record is a totally faked experience, and has to serve the purpose of catching a brand new listener’s ear while still sounding as natural as possible. In some places, we were quite successful. We’ll be much clearer on our full-length.

What was the last show you went to see, as a fan? Also, who’s at the top of your list as far as concerts you’d want to see?
Devon: Daniel Johnston at the Lakeshore Theater. I’d kill anyone to see Kinks 1967.
Jim: Bill Callahan at the Old Town Shool. Joanna Newsom also played, I think it was right after Ys was released. I would love to see My Bloody Valentine get back together and play Coachella.

The internet has dramatically altered the way bands can reach an audience. With things like blogs/myspace/etc, what are your thoughts on the power of the internet in terms of helping (or hurting) your music?

It obviously helps a bunch as far as networking and branding, although things like myspace are far more social than music support these days. On the other hand, that makes it easy to connect with people further away from where we can tour. Blogs have been nothing but nice to us so far, and have been really helpful with word of mouth. Its also nice to be able to google yourself.

Who would you like to hear cover a night’s worth of your material? On the flip side, if you were to play an entire set of someone else’s songs, whose would you choose and/or enjoy the most?

We weren’t sure about this question, but upon deliberation we agreed that it would actually be pretty cool to hear Roy Orbison sing all of our songs with the band from Black & White. Coincidentally, we would love to play an entire set of Roy’s songs, and have done our best with “In Dreams” a time or two.
