Spencer Krug is easy to keep track of, just follow the path of some of the more interesting indie acts of late and soon enough you’ll stumble upon his greatness. When he’s not holding down duties in Wolf Parade or contributing to the quasi supergroup Swan Lake and Frog Eyes, he’s fronting what is arguably his greatest body of work with his band Sunset Rubdown.
As one of the hardest working men in rock and roll, I remove my hat and give props to Krug for his continuing ability to put out great records at an unbelievable pace, while never leaving me feeling that the music is at all watered down or hurried. Greatness is certainly embodied in Sunset Rubdown’s upcoming record, Random Spirit Lover, due out October, 9th on Jagjaguwar.
If you fell in love with last year’s Shut Up, I’m Dreaming like we did, you’ll certainly love Random Spirit Lover. It’s just a bit to early for me to say I like it more, but as far as 2007 releases go, this one has a good chance to wind up being one of my favorite albums of the year, and one that I will actually listen to when the flood of new material for 2008 begins.
Our friends at Insound have quite a deal for those of you who want to get a digital copy of the album early. Pre-order and receive the MP3s of the entire album on 9/25, and, while supplies last, receive a FREE silk-screened poster! Until then, you can download two tracks off Random Spirit Lover below:

Random Spirit Lover is a statement of extreme beauty and passion. Without doubt the album of 2007. Spencer Krug is the greatest songwriter of our generation.

I think it’s much better than the first…keep listening, you’ll get there. A truly great accomplishment for indie music. This one will stand the test of time. It only raises the bar further for the next Wolf Parade album.

the synth sounds used on this new record are annoying and this album is much more like a Frog Eyes record than a Wolf Parade record, thus… not nearly as enjoyable as the first for me.
as for standing the test of time, maybe so, but i can tell you already that Pitchfork won’t give it as high of a score as the first.

also, it just doesn’t have nearly as great of melodies… i guess if you prefer weirder stuff over melodies/harmonies, i can understand liking it more somewhat…

No your wrong man! Just keeping listening its such a grower its not even funny. and this album has a ridic amount of melody! Once you learn the structure of the songs you realize how breathaking the album is becuase Krug just rides this melodies out perfectly until they just thunder over eachother and create waves like the ocean

Hi! I was surfing the internet Monday afternoon during my break, and found your blog by searching MSN for sunset gardening. This is a topic I have great interest in, and follow it closely. I liked your insight on We Like: Sunset Rubdown – Random Spirit Lover, and it made for good reading. Keep up the good work…

I think homeboy definitely picked up a few tricks from Carey Mercer and Dan Bejar during the whole Swan Lake thing. And man oh fucking man is this good!
