Artist: Broken Social Scene Presents: Kevin Drew
Album: Spirit If…
Label: Arts & Crafts
Myspace: Kevin Drew
MP3: Kevin Drew – tbtf
Video: Backed Out On The…
MoB: Seeing Broken Social Scene two years ago at Lollapalooza remains one of my favorite concerts ever. Now Kevin Drew uses the band he co-founded as a springboard to showcase his songwriting capabilities while enlisting more than twenty special guests, most of whom have done time in BSS. Expect more Broken Social Scene Presents albums again in the future.

Artist: Steve Earle
Album: Washington Square Serenade
Label: New West Records
Myspace: Steve Earle
Video: Backed Out On The…
MoB: We pretty much summed up our adoration for Earle over the weekend, but it’s worth saying again. “At his best, Steve Earle’s is one of our favorite songwriters still kicking out the folk-rooted tunes. At his worst, he’d still make our top ten.

Artist: Les Savy Fav
Album: Let’s Stay Friends
Label: Frenchkiss
Myspace: Les Savy Fav
MP3: Les Savy Fav – What Would Wolves Do
MP3: Les Savy Fav – The Equestrian
Video: We’ll Make A Lover Of You
MoB: It’s hard for me to truly understand or “get” these guys having never seen their near-legendary live performances. That being said, Let’s Stay Friends is one of their most aurally pleasing albums that have come through our ears in some time.

Artist: Rogue Wave
Album: Asleep At Heaven’s Gate
Label: Brushfire
Myspace: Rogue Wave
Video: Lake Michigan
MoB: Boy did we love Decended Like Vultures, seriously we posted a lot about Rogue Wave in the past year. Now with a new label and a new record you’ll find most of the same, though extended song length and earth consciousness lyrics are more recognizable.

Artist: Eddie Vedder
Album: Music for the Motion Picture Into the Wild
Label: J Records
Myspace: Into The Wild
Video: Into The Wild – Trailer
MoB: It was only a matter of time before Eddie went ahead and did the solo album thing. It was always something I wondered about, and mostly worried, fearing that it wouldn’t meet my standards. Color me impressed with Eddie’s talents on capturing the story of Christopher McCandless in song for the upcoming movie, “Into The Wild.”

Artist: Thurston Moore
Album: Trees Outside The Academy
Label: Ecstatic Peace
Myspace: Thurston Moore
Video: Album Preview
MoB: Two years ago I walked the length of the Lollapalooza grounds with Thurston Moore. It was completely by accident, and I was content to just enjoy the moment, but he brought up the hot weather, and soon enough we were talking about bands we were going to see and our thoughts on the city of Chicago. While this isn’t Thurston’s first venture into solo territory, I have to say that it’s easily my favorite.

Thanks for the above reviews and comments/commentaries. Our son is a musician and plays/sings within the corral of Arts & Crafts Records. We attend a few concerts/shows each season – various musicians: eg. Feist, Lucinda Williams, Neil Young, Sarah Harmer, Apostle of Hustle, Jason Collett, Matt Barber, Jim Cuddy, BSS,… – and listen to and skim tunes and reviews.
I’ve enjoyed your format; it’s not as self-focussed as many are.

i would also recommend the solo vedder outing- it’s a very specific thing- i am guessing from the length- that the songs were actually scored to scenes (many of them are under two minutes). Short, understated, but a cool side project- makes me more interested in seeing the film-
John,
Yup, Eddie talks about it here:
