Tuesday’s Gold: What We Recommend #29

Each Tuesday stop by Muzzle of Bees for our recommended purchases for the week. Here are the albums we suggest for the release date of October 9th:

the-flying-cup-club.jpg
Artist: Beirut
Album: The Flying Club Cup
Label: Ba Da Bing
Myspace: Beirut
MP3: Beirut – “A Sunday Smile”
Video: View a “Take Away Show” for each song at The Flying Club Cup page.
MoB: Review: Beirut – Portage Theater, Chicago
MoB: “Quite simply this record has really been one of the most refreshing things I’ve listened to the second half of the year. “As a fan of Gulag Orkestar and (to a somewhat lesser extent) Lon Gisland, I can honestly say, with little reservations that this is Beirut in its finest hour.” Read the rest of our review here.

band-of-horses.jpg
Artist: Band Of Horses
Album: Cease To Begin
Label: Sub Pop
Myspace: Band Of Horses
MP3: Band Of Horses – “Is There A Ghost”
Video: Band Of Horses – “The Funeral” (Live on David Letterman)
MoB: Initially, I wasn’t sure what I thought about this record. I was disappointed that it was so short, but, after repeated listens, it’s found its way deep into my listening habits. Much like their last record, the songs are infections and cement themselves in my head all day long. The beautiful cover art and accompanying photographs only enhance and encourage buying this record.

window-city.jpg
Artist: Fiery Furnaces
Album: Window City
Label: Thrill Jockey
Myspace: Fiery Furnaces
Video: The Fiery Furnaces – “Single Again”
MoB: At their best, The Fiery Furnaces are one of my favorite bands. Sometimes they make me cringe. Window City is a strong release that doesn’t make me cringe and gets me super excited to see them in a couple days.
Upcoming: 10/10 – Shank Hall, Milwaukee | 10/11 – The Annex, Madison

sunset-rubdown.jpg
Artist: Sunset Rubdown
Album: Random Spirit Lover
Label: Jagjaguwar
Myspace: Sunset Rubdown
MP3: Sunset Rubdown – Winged/Wicked Things
MP3: Sunset Rubdown – Up On Your Leopard, Upon The End Of Your Feral Days
Video: Sunset Rubdown – “Stadiums and Shrines II”
MoB: “As far as 2007 releases go, this one has a good chance to wind up being one of my favorite albums of the year, and one that I will actually listen to when the flood of new material for 2008 begins.” Read the rest of our review here.

jens-lekman.jpg
Artist: Jens Lekman
Album: Night Falls Over Kortedala
Label: Secretly Canadian
MP3: Jens Lekman – ” The Opposite of Hallelujah”
MP3: Jens Lekman – “Friday Night at the Drive-In Bingo”
Video: Jens Lekman – ” Sipping On The Sweet Nectar (video directed by Marcus Soderlund)”
MoB: We’ve long been fans of Jens Lekman, seeing him two years ago at the Pitchfork Music Festival remains one of the most beautiful and happy concert moments we’ve been part of. He’s yet to release a disappointing record, and Night Falls Over Kortedala just may be his best record to date. I thought I’d reviewed this record prior, but now realize I lapsed and did not, let me apologize because this record is a must have.

doveman.jpg
Artist: Doveman
Album: With My Left Hand I Raise the Dead
Label: Brassland
Myspace: Doveman
MP3: Doveman – “… & Sunrise Melody”
Video: Doveman – “Castles”
MoB: A successful and stunning sophomore effort for Thomas Bartlett. We only wish all the songs had names, instead we defer to album tracks to do them justice. There’s a reason why Sufjan Stevens and The National are recruiting him to lend a hand on their records – he’s that good.
