Yeasayer :: All Hour Cymbals

Now that the year end list is up it’s time to troll through the seemingly endless list of albums that I apparently missed out on or was late to the game on. One of those bands is Yeasayer, who released All Hour Cymbals this year to an abundance of positive praise.

My first exposure to the group wasn’t through their album at all, but came when I downloaded a couple of tracks off their Daytrotter session. I listened to “Sunrise” from that session quite a bit, but that was about the extent of my connection to the group. Over the weekend I finally made the leap of faith, using up my eMusic downloads to grab this and All Hour Cymbals. The songs embody a nice big community feel, something that sounds a little spacier than a band should be able to pull off without sounding forced – not the case with these guys, they’ve found their voice(s)/groove. The lyrics, when delivered individually drip with an echoed sound, though the original voice is usually joined in unison by the rest of the group for that chanted/spirited feel.

Overall, my five day exposure to the album has been pretty great. I’m still partial to the versions on that Daytrotter session because, well, they were my first. Though the album itself is definitely worth checking out.
