Only a month into 2008 and a few albums have risen above the rest, tunneling into my head and heart. No Kids Come Into My House is one of those albums. It doesn’t go stale after repeated listens, and is fun on first acquaintance. They are one of the bands I am most excited about seeing at SXSW this year. I caught up with Nick Krgovich for another installment of our 5 Questions with Muzzle of Bees feature.
Could you lend some information on the recording process of Come Into My House? Where and how was it recorded, and were there any lessons learned that you’ll apply towards future recording sessions?
We recorded Come Into My House at the Hive Studios in Vancouver with Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Destroyer etc). We were in the studio off and on for about 8 months, naturally the album changed shape a lot during that time. There seems to be a world of difference between the first song we recorded (Old Iron Gate) and the last one (The Beaches All Closed), so we were certainly learning new things along the way. I feel that this is one of the main reasons for making anything, hoping that there’s a long list of things to try next time, things that would’ve never occurred to us any other way.
What’s it like knowing that David Byrne has listened to your record? How did you find out that it was up on his site? Were/are you guys fans of the Talking Heads or David’s solo material?
Sheesh, it’s pretty wonderful knowing that Byrne is in. I remember listening to Speaking in Tongues and Little Creatures when I was little, I’ve certainly been a Talking Heads fan my entire life. I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon with him in NYC back in December. Jan and Christopher from Tomlab, and my friend Phil and I were invited to his Todo Mundo office to hang out. We all swapped records, and shortly after someone ended up e-mailing me saying that he found out about No Kids through David Byrne’s radio programme. Seriously nuts. I can’t think of a more terrific person to endorse our jams, it’s a total honor.
We just wrapped up our favorite concerts and albums of 2007, do you have any shows or albums that stood out as favorites for you this past year?
I’m not very good at making definitive lists of things. Top 10’s and all that. Pretty much whenever Robert Wyatt makes a record I get excited. I think “Comicopera” is really fantastic. I’ve been pretty obsessed with John Maus‘ record “Love Is Real”. I’d say about 3/4’s of Mary J Blige’s new album “Growing Pains” is amazing. I saw Dirty Projectors play a handful of times in 2007 and they are obviously a wonder. I often put on Judy Garland’s “Judy at Carnegie Hall” and pretend I’m there, does that count???
The internet has dramatically altered the way artists can reach an audience. With things like blogs/myspace/etc, what are your thoughts on the power of the internet in terms of helping (or hurting) your music?
I don’t really think about it. I’d assume it helps and hinders it in different ways. I’m not sure.
Will you guys be playing SXSW? What about other tour plans for 2008?
Yes, we will be there. It’ll be the first No Kids show ever. Such a weird thing to do. Then in April we’ve been invited to join Dirty Projectors for part of their upcoming tour. We’ll also be touring Europe for a month with Mount Eerie in May/June. We are totally excited about all of these things.
