It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly a year since I saw Jason Isbell step out of his role with the Drive-By Truckers and deliver a sweaty rock showcase at Club DeVille in Austin during SXSW. Since that time, his departure from the band initially brought reservations, not about his solo output but that the Truckers material would begin to wane. After about a month with Brighter Than Creations Dark, it might be the best work in their career, and Isbell’s Sirens Of The Ditch is equally as great. Sometimes a split means mediocrity on both sides, sometimes one gets stronger as the other fades away, and sometimes both do just fine, perhaps better on their own.
Last night Jason Isbell thanked the crowd and announced it was his third time playing in Madison. Indeed it was, but was the first time I’d seen him here in Madison. Because of the multiple appearances I had worried and somewhat expected there would be a sparse attendance, but I was happy to walk through the doors to see a crowded house. I continue to maintain that “Dress Blues” may be one of the best acoustic tracks of the past couple years – great tune.
The performance proved that this band continues to grow their sound together. Since last year there is a very noticeable coming together, they’re more comfortable with each other on stage, which was supremely evident last night. Finally, and most importantly it brought Sirens Of The Ditch back into heavy rotation, especially the opening track “Brand New Kind Of Actress.” I suggest you make a reconnection as well. Turn it up.
Off to brush my teeth for the tenth time today in hopes of finally eradicating the lingering taste of Makers Mark.

I caught both of his shows – the Terrace last summer and supporting Cracker @ the High Noon last fall. My opinion was that this was the best of all. “Dress Blues” is an all-time favorite, and I was really happy to hear “Danko/Manuel.” I was impressed by Will Hoge as well. Didn’t make it in time to catch the opener though.
Lake Louie Milk Stout made my Friday morning less than ideal. A toothbrush at the office would be a helluva good idea.

I was at the show with Cracker, and even though that was a good show, I believe that they turned it up this time. The improptu cover of The Man In Me may have been the highlight for me. Although, I think I was the only one singing along. All in all, I hope that they come back, because the live show is always amazing. Dawn Landes was a fun opener, but I was kinda dismayed by Will Hoge — the song writing just didn’t seem there.
