Tuesday’s Gold: What We Recommend #47

Each Tuesday stop by Muzzle of Bees for our recommended purchases for the week. Here is the album we suggest for the release date of March 4th:

felice-brothers.jpg
Artist: The Felice Brothers
Album: Felice Brothers
Label: Team Love
Myspace: The Felice Brothers
MP3: The Felice Brothers – “Frankie’s Gun”
MP3: The Felice Brothers – “Wonderful Life”
Video: The Felice Brothers – “Roll on Arte”
Upcoming: 3/29 – The Felice Brothers – Rathskeller, Madison
MoB: 5 Questions with the Felice Brothers
MoB: We were fans of the Felice Brothers long before they warmed up the stage for the Drive-By Truckers at the Pabst in Milwaukee. Their performance cemented our adoration, and, though the year is early, “Frankie’s Gun” is one of our favorite tracks of the year.

asking-for-flowers.jpg
Artist: Kathleen Edwards
Album: Asking for Flowers
Label: Zoe Records
Myspace: Kathleen Edwards
Video: Kathleen Edwards – “Back To Me”
Upcoming: Muzzle of Bees Presents :: 5/3 – Kathleen Edwards – Majestic Theatre, Madison
MoB: We’ve long been a fan of the beautiful storytelling captured by this lovely Canadian songwriter. Currently on heavy rotation, I can’t foresee any reason why this one wouldn’t attain all the accolades that Failer and Back To Me received in the past. Highly recommended.

jim-white.jpg
Artist: Jim White
Album: Transnormal Skiperoo
Luaka Bop
Myspace: Jim White
MP3: Jim White – “Crash Into The Sun”
Video: Jim White – “”If Jesus Drove A Motor Home”
MoB: “Jim White’s music evokes his Southern surroundings, the power of the creator, and sometimes the outright weird. Transnormal Skiperoo is a release that will reach past Jim’s weirdo fan base (myself included) and should garner him substantial praise and attention.” Read our full review of this record.

malkmus.jpg
Artist: Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks
Album: Real Emotional Trash
Label: Matador
Myspace: Stephen Malkmus
MP3: Stephen Malkmus – “Baltimore”
MP3: Stephen Malkmus – “Cold Son”
Video: Stephen Malkmus – “We Dance” (Live from Pitchfork Music Festival, Chicago)
Related: “Malkmus keeping it ‘Real’ on new album” [Daily Cardinal]
Upcoming: 3/20 – Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks – Pabst Theater, Milwaukee
MoB: Malkmus lets loose with the jam on his fourth solo outing since his work with Pavement. The Jicks now welcome Janet Weiss of Sleater-Kinney fame to the fold on drums and backing vox. His set at the Pitchfork Music Festival last year was really special.

shots.jpg
Artist: Ladyhawk
Album: Shots
Label: Jagjaguwar
Myspace: Ladyhawk
MP3: Ladyhawk – “I Don’t Always Know What You’re Saying”
Video: Let Me Be Fictional: A Documentary about Ladyhawk
Upcoming: 3/16 – Ladyhawk/Shazy Hade – High Noon Saloon, Madison
MoB: You get what you expect for with Ladyhawk, which is why I keep returning to their stuff with each release. They put on one hell of a live performance and their previous self-titled record was an MoB favorite.

strangers-almanac.jpg
Artist: Whiskeytown
Album: Strangers Almanac Deluxe Edition
Label: Lost Highway
Video: Whiskeytown – “16 Days” (Live from St. Louis, 1997)
MoB: An album that needs no introduction, gets a companion disc that’s filled up with extras and selections from the “Barn’s on Fire sessions.”

saturnalia.jpg
Artist: The Gutter Twins
Album: Saturnalia
Label: Sub Pop
Myspace: Gutter Twins
MP3: Gutter Twins – “Idle Hands”
Video: Gutter Twins – “The Stations” (Live from NYC)
Upcoming: 3/9 – The Gutter Twins/Great Northern – High Noon Saloon, Madison
MoB: The pairing of Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli does wonders to exercise both musical and emotional demons. Though planned for years, now finally here, the album certainly seems worth the wait.

the-oaks.jpg
Artist: The OaKs
Album: Songs For Waiting
Label: Self Released
Myspace: The OaKs
MP3: The OaKs – “The Two Calls”
MP3: The OaKs – “The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter”
Video: The OaKs – “The Making of Songs For Waiting (Pt. 1)”
Video: The OaKs – “The Making of Songs For Waiting (Pt. 2)”
MoB: I was introduced to these guys due to high praise from last year’s Our Fathers and The Things They Left Behind, which eventually found a permanent spot in my car. No sophomore slump here, this record delivers just as much as their last. Definitely a band to watch in 2008.

i wonder if that whiskeytown is worth picking up?
more importantly, i wonder if they would ever reunite?

Julio – I debated on picking it up last night while I was working at the record store. I’m sure I’ll pick it up at some point. I have no idea where my physical copy of the original is these days anyway.

I really like the new ladyhawk, but I think it’s because they made some huge strides. They are so much tighter now. They played the new stuff here in Vancouver and the sound was huge, but they played off each other really well.
