SXSW: Friday

Dizzee Rascal

Friday was a much friskier and busy day for Jodi in Austin . . .

Friday morning, I rushed over to the Yaris/Urban Outfitters/Current set to catch what was the last 30 seconds of White Williams and the Dizzee Rascal set. Dizzee was great, pumping up the parking lot set with old and new songs alike. Next I skipped over to the Hot Freaks showcase in time for the majestic Nicole Atkins & the Sea. First time I heard this group and I must say I was impressed. I stuck around long enough for a few tracks by the Hood Internet and to say hello to Ryan, before skipping out as soon as The Dodos took to the stage in order to catch the Weakerthans at the Paste and Stereogum bash.

As soon as I managed to squeeze into the full house at Volume, my favorite Candians rockers started strumming as if on cue, the beautifully poppy “Night Windows.” As soon as the Weakerthans finished up to a very happy crowd, we jetted back to the Current tent just in time to catch Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward bless the lot full of kids with a handful of tracks from the upcoming Merge release “Volume One” for She & Him.

Next on the agenda were These New Puritans who rocked the crowd at Fader, and then Lightspeed Champion at Filter, who was much more different since I last saw Mr. Devonte Hynes rock it at CMJ ’05 in his then current band, Test Icicles.

Following the folksy fun set of Lightspeed, we jumped over to the Mad Decent parking garage soiree to catch the conclusion of Chicago’s own Flosstradamus’ electro happy dance set and followed with Santogold, backed up by Diplo. I was so entranced with these three lovely ladies’ fly dance moves and Santi White’s M.I.A.ish vocal styles that I had to check them again later that evening with the Ting Tings and MGMT at Stubb’s.

Concluding my biggest day of the week was the insane set by the Cool Kids (& Flosstradamus again) at Emo’s Main. I wasn’t the only eager fan at this up and coming Chicago hip hop set, at one point I was standing literally arm to arm beside Perry Ferrell and ended up sitting next to Slug from Atmosphere. The set was hot, Chuck Inglish, Mikey Rocks and V.I. PJay had the packed crowd swaying and breaking it down to favorites such as “88,” “Gold and a Pager,” “Black Mags” and “Mikey Rocks.” Amazing, amazing set. A-Trak, and then fellow Chicagoan (and older sister to Josh J2K Young of Flosstradamus) Kid Sister stepped it up next. Kid Sister even had a nails booth versus a merch booth as homage to her Kanye West hit, “Pro Nails.” Clipse finished off the night and I was feeling a bit too much of a white girl for my own good, and we were off to battle the cabs to get back to the hotel.
