Each Tuesday stop by Muzzle of Bees for our recommended purchases for the week. Here is the album we suggest for the release date of March 18th:

Artist: DeVotchKa
Album: A Mad and Faithful Telling
Label: Anti
Myspace: DeVotchKa
Video: DeVotchKa – “How It Ends” (Live at Bonnaroo)
Upcoming: 5/8 – DeVotchKa/Basis Bulat – Turner Hall Ballroom, Milwaukee
MoB: “Originally a backing band for burlesque shows,” the group has come a long way and seeing different audiences these days. After seeing them in Austin last week, I’m convinced they’re one of my favorite bands, especially live. On record they’re as solid as ever, continuing their worldly sound that has made them favorites for some time.

Artist: She & Him
Album: Volume One
Label: Merge
Myspace: She & Him
MP3: She & Him – “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?”
Video: She & Him (SXSW Performance)
MoB: I’ll admit I was skeptical and initially underwhelmed by this release combining Zooey Deschanel’s pipes and M. Ward’s craftsmanship. On its face, I was expecting/hoping more Ward vocals/harmonies interspersed, little of which the album provides. A few more listens and I grew to enjoy the sweet throwback sound, thanks to a lot of exposure during SXSW, they seemed to be the talk of the town. The album opener, “Sentimental Heart” my be one of the most beautiful tracks of the year so far.

Artist: Destroyer
Album: Trouble In Dreams
Label: Merge
Myspace: Destroyer
MP3: Destroyer – “Foam Hands”
MP3: Destroyer – “Dark Leaves Form A Thread”
Video: Destroyer – “Foam Hands” (Sled Island Fest 2007)
Upcoming: 4/17/08 – Logan Square Auditorium, Chicago
MoB: His last release Rubies was lauded by many, but I just couldn’t get behind it the way everyone else did. Not the case with this one that exhibits a little less of the vocal whine I’ve been adverse to in the past. No doubting his talents both to his solo output and his contributions to the New Pornographers.

Yeah, I totally agree that DeVotchKa would be tough to love fully unless you’d seem ‘em live. But after you see them live, the albums just click. Just a heads up, if you can’t wait to get to the record store, you can stream the new disc at http://spinner.aol.com/artists/new-releases-full-cds?defaultTab=11

Great recommendation for Devotchka. They are fantastic live, but I can spend a lot of time with their records and predict long-lasting enjoyment of the new one, too.
