With SXSW behind us, it’s worth looking back on our favorites from our time in Austin, thus closing the book on our 2008 coverage. Below you’ll find our highlights and favorites from what was once again a great time.

Drink of Choice: So much whiskey this week
Regret You Missed: Bobby Bare Jr., She and Him, first half of Bon Iver set. Also wish I had drank some Lone Star.

Favorite Performances: Robyn, The Cool Kids, HEALTH
New Discoveries: Santogold!!!
Not Your Thing: People will heckle me for saying so, but MGMT just wasn’t what I thought it would be. . .
Favorite Venue: I’d have to go with Emo’s since I spent the most time there and I dug the multiple stage action
Favorite Party/Showcase: Fader/Levi’s Fort– free sparks, bass, Stellas & soco but the Paste/Stereogum joint was pretty swanky as well.
Best Food: The Rio, aka the Real World House of Austin, converted into a delicious Mexican joint with everclear margaritas and stellar quesadillas.
Best Freebie: I was pretty content with some eye drops being handed
out in the street, but I think I’m gonna go ahead and thank Ben’s Brother for the delicious Dentyne gum
Drink of Choice: Sparks!
Regret You Missed: Nada Surf, Vampire Weekend and the Raveonettes, but
they’ll all be in Chicago soon enough anyway.

Are you nuts, Jodi? Emo’s is the most craptastic venue in all of Austin. Even members of the foreign press were publicly complaining about this venue. I don’t understand how the worst venue can get the biggest shows. Not only is it dirty, but the pillars obstruct views for much of the audience.

MGMT were just god awful in Minneapolis last month… fairly decent record (3-4 great songs, but plenty of filler), but that combined w/ their so-so opening slot for Of Montreal last October, not impressed by that band live at all.
