Photos: Vampire Weekend – Turner Hall, Milwaukee

So last night Vampire Weekend rocked Turner Hall just a day after filling the High Noon Saloon to gills. Once again, MoB friend and contributor Daniel Brielmaier was in attendance to provide a couple of shots for you faithful readers. Much like myself, Dan was on the fence going into the show, and while not coming away a full-fledged believer, did acknowledge the show was indeed a fun time.

Final thoughts on the group? We’ve already determined they’re not playing the Terrace again. What else? Next Dave Matthews Band or next Clap Your Hands Say Yeah? How was YACHT?

First impression? 4 pretty green kids on their first big tour, doing as well as they can.

First things first though, Yacht was…..well, he was odd. That’s the only way to describe it. It was a guy with an Apple laptop singing/talking along with pre-recorded tracks. He was definitely enthusiastic about it, jumping into the crowd a couple of times, the latter of which was to start a small mosh pit in front of the stage. I was glad I got there for opener, if only for the good spot I got in the balcony, but I doubt I will ever willingly listen to Yacht again.

Vampire Weekend came on around 9:20 for a set that lasted about 50-60 minutes. This was to be expected though, for a young band with a small repertoire. They went through thier short set with plenty of energy and the sold out crowd was excited and loud the entire show.

Showing a bit of youth and inexperience several songs into the show, a string on Ezra Koenig’s guitar broke, prompting him to stop mid-song. After picking up the keyboard player’s guitar, they started back up to a rousing applause, though I have to imagine that a more seasoned band might have handled something like that a little more gracefully.

All in all, the group played a short but well played show that included all of their previously recorded material as well as one track from their next release. The show was full of energy, and if they can continue to write material equal to what they already have, I think I’m ready to be a a fan.
