Mark your calendars, kids. This next Tuesday is a pretty big deal. It will be a much more dance worthy day than the Tuesday past, and the Tuesday next. One word explanation: Santogold.
April 29th is the official drop date for this delicious new pop record, and as you can probably tell, I’m pretty excited. Please be pre-warned, I’m a bit of a compulsive obsessive when it comes to catchy, upbeat pop hooks, so it’s no wonder why Miss Santi White, aka the songwriter/singer mastermind known as Santogold, has got me trapped. Trapped in a pop dance haven, that is.
Santogold’s self-titled 12-track debut album is full of kitschy new wave reggae, club pop dance hall anthems, and just overall fun. It’s no mystery how comparisons have been drawn to the likes of former tour mate M.I.A.; both are ferociously radical female singers and have exuberantly sharp fashion tastes. And they’re both danceable as hell. Ever since I got my grubby little hands on this album, the soundtrack to my very existence has consisted of beeps, claps and synths. Addictive numbers like the ridiculously upbeat and summeresque “Say Aha,” single “L.E.S Artistes,” bouncable “Unstoppable,” and eccentric “Creator” have quickly bumped their way up onto my ITunes library top 25 most played songs EASY—much to the dismay of my downstairs neighbor.
“Shove It,” is another particularly stand-out track, with the snotty repetitive chorus of “We think you’re a joke, shove your hope where it don’t shine.” Side note: do not listen to this at work on your iPod, or you might find yourself singing along out loud to some dismaying glares from colleagues.
There’s a little something for everybody; so if you’re not up on electro pop speed, there are some slower synthed out tracks such as the sweaty, toned down “Starstruck,” or the darling sax packed, jazzy “I’m a Lady.”
Maybe it’s my reminiscing of the lively, energetic live shows Santogold brought, complete with Diplo as DJ and choreographed identical back-up singer dancers at the now so long ago sunny paradise of SXSW. Maybe it’s because the dizzy electro pop makes me feel like I should be cruising top down on some busy lit street. Maybe it’s White’s delectable crazed out vocal style, the upbeat tempo. The power percussion, the super sick beeps. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s because Santogold kicks ass.
Does it really matter why this debut release is so amazing? No, it doesn’t. That being said, go do yourself a favor and pick up this album. Unless of course, you’re not a fan of dancing. In which case, it’s time to quit reading this and get back to work.
