The Revival Tour :: Chuck Ragan/Tim Barry/Ben Nichols

Posted on Monday 28 April 2008

This is good news, which could turn into great news should this tour make a pass through Wisconsin. We’ll keep you posted as the tour dates materialize. Until then, details via the press release:

In a match made in folk-punk heaven, Hot Water Music’s Chuck Ragan, Avail’s Tim Barry and Lucero’s Ben Nichols will embark on The Revival Tour this fall, , a series of shows that will see all three artists playing solo sets as well as performing on each other’s material. “All the tours that I’ve done since I’ve been doing this solo stuff have in some way or the other ended up with a bunch of friends onstage by the end of the night,” Ragan explains, adding that each performer will be joined by a backing band that will change based on geography and include many of their peers and previous tourmates. “I’ve always loved seeing that and now I’m absolutely loving creating something like that with good friends who think and believe along the same lines.”

The tour will mark Ragan’s final run in support of last year’s solo debut Feast Or Famine, after which he’ll begin pre-production on his next album for SideOneDummy. Barry is touring in support of his own folk debut, Rivanna Junction. Although the two musicians met in the nineties while fronting two of the most influential DIY punk bands of the era, in recent years both songwriters have begun to explore folk and bluegrass compositions, making this tour a perfect pairing of ideologies and instrumentation.

Nichols entered the picture when him and Ragan recently toured in January, but it wasn’t until this year’s SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, that the plan was solidified. “We were both doing our own thing and weren’t there in conjunction, but ended up sitting down for some drinks after one of the long days,” Ragan explains. “We agreed on a time, shook hands and kept on drinking.” While the tour will feature individual sets from each artist, it will be more reminiscent of the folk tradition of involving multiple artist collaborations—and each performer will have guests coming on and off stage, including the three primary songwriters who plan to hunker down in Barry’s Richmond, Virginia backyard this summer to learn each other’s respective tracks.

“The three of us have been in bands that each have their own sound, but I think we’re all coming from the same place musically concerning this tour,” Nichols explains. “When it comes down to it, we all appreciate good songs and good songwriters and that’s what this tour is all about,” he adds, “stripping everything down to its basic form and playing some good songs with some of your friends. The idea of Woody Guthrie, just a man and a guitar, is very appealing to all of us—and the chance to be a part of something like that with Chuck and Tim is something I couldn’t pass up. We all have our own types of songs, but I think it’ll be a blast basically sitting around a campfire every night playing music with some friends.”

“I don’t know what it’s going to end up sounding like from night-to-night and that’s the coolest thing about it,” explains Barry. “I don’t think anyone is going to know what it’s going to sound like until we get up there, but I can honestly say that I’m more excited about music now than I’ve been in a long time.” The routing hasn’t been confirmed yet, but The Revival Tour will tentatively take place from late September through mid-November and traverse the entire country. “There’s only a few bands that I feel that kinship with as far as personalities beyond music; there’s some people where you’re like, ‘this is my family on the road no matter what.’ Hot Water Music and Lucero are two of the few bands I feel that way about,” Barry summarizes. “It’s going to be a thrill to do this.”

5 Questions with Cloud Cult

Posted on Monday 28 April 2008

Cloud Cult recently swung through Madison in support of their Tuesday’s Gold stamped release, Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes). As a long-time favorite here at MoB, we’re happy to have pinned down Craig Minowa for our continuing 5 Questions with Muzzle of Bees feature.

Could you lend some information on the recording process of Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes)? Where and how was it recorded, and were there any lessons learned that you’ll apply towards future recording sessions?

It was recorded at the farm where Connie and I live in northern Minnesota. I have a studio in the basement there with very modest gear. I did most of the writing and recording over the course of a year and then the band came in in early January 2008 to lay their portion. My biggest lesson on this album is that I need to write for myself. I had writer’s block the first couple of months, because I was worried about what reviewers were going to think. It wasn’t until I decided I don’t give a rip that it all came gushing out.

We’re always looking to uncover new favorite artists, are there any band(s)/record(s) that you could recommend to our readers?

I’m totally unhip and don’t listen to indie-rock much. I could recommend some bluegrass, big band music or classical music. I’m an NPR junkie, as well, so that’s all I listen to. I don’t know squat about the indie rock world when it comes to who’s hip and who’s not.

The internet has dramatically altered the way artists can reach an audience. With things like blogs/MySpace/etc, what are your thoughts on the power of the internet in terms of helping (or hurting) your music?

It hurts to see the album get hacked literally thousands of times before it’s even released, but overall, the internet is a big help. We have reached a much wider audience thanks to the internet and digital distribution is the greenest form of making a record. I have big plans for utilizing the internet in creative ways for the next Cloud Cult project. It’s going to be slightly weird and definitely experimental, so stay tuned…

If you were to play an entire set of someone else’s songs, whose material would you choose and/or enjoy playing the most?

Nick Drake. I’d be filled with total peace when the set is over.

I admire your environmentally conscious approach to your recording and touring. What advice or suggestions could you make to any up-and-coming groups that want to lessen their impact on the world as they begin their careers in the music industry?

You can help green your tour with less money than you’d think. www.nativeenergy.com has a great online calculator for making sure your energy is green and americanforests.org also has a calculator for planting enough trees to absorb your co2. Also think about your merchandise. It costs more to go organic and 100% post consumer recycled, but you need to run your business in the way you’d hope the Exxons and Monsantos of the world run theirs. We point the finger at them for all the crud they make, but when we run our own business, if we don’t make green choices, we’re no less guilty.

Review: Blueheels – Majestic Theatre, Madison

Posted on Sunday 27 April 2008

Last night was a long time coming. I’d been bombarded by friends and complete strangers about the greatness that is the Blueheels. Alas, our paths never crossed in person until last night at the Majestic Theatre for the band’s release party for Lessons In Sunday Driving.

The crowd was filled up with die hard loyalists to the group, ready to dance, shake and sing along. My familiarity with the group begins and ends with Lessons In Sunday Driving material, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying every single note and drop of excitement – a precursor to big things for this group.

Last year Bon Iver was Wisconsin’s biggest musical success to be catapulted out of state and onto critical acclaim and national attention. This year belongs to the Blueheels, whose sound rallies cries of Hank Williams and The Avett Brothers mixed with driving blues and foot stomping old-time country. All that and then the sprinkled in a surprising but spot-on cover of The Flaming Lips “Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (Part 1).”

I’ve yet to call over to the Majestic to see if they were able to dislodge my jaw from the floor, as it may be permanently there. In truth, if this blog branched off and started a record label they’d be the first group I’d try to sign.

Review: Ladyhawk – Club 770, Madison

Posted on Sunday 27 April 2008

We were still nursing our SXSW inflicted wounds the last time Ladyhawk swung through town to play the High Noon Saloon. Prior to that we caught the group at the same venue behind their self-titled and MoB approved record, cementing the bands as one of our favorites both on record and in a live setting.

Last night was a free show at Club 770, their second show in the city in as many months, but boy was it great to finally hear songs from Shots live. “(I’ll Be Your) Ashtray” and “I Don’t Always Know What Your Saying” were definite highlights of the night, but the song that always gets me is “The Dugout,” they could have probably played the song twice in a row with no complaints from the audience. Though they failed to play my favorite song (“Teenage Love Song”), this set, with expanded catalog en tow, really captured the growth of the band since the last time I saw them. I think they gained some new fans along the way as well.

Was this your first time seeing Ladyhawk? What did you think? Did anyone pick up one of those sweet Chewbacca looking shirts? Did you stick around for Neva Dinova? How were they?
