Deep Blues Festival :: Lake Elmo, MN :: July 18th-20th

Posted on Saturday 31 May 2008

Deep Blues Festival

The 2nd annual Deep Blues Festival will go down July 18th-20th at the Washington County Fairgrounds, Lake Elmo, MN. Did anyone make it to last year’s festival?

One of the most intimate summer festival settings (capacity is limited to 2,000 fans each day) will feature 46 bands and film festival screenings over the course of the weekend. The line up features some of out of the way greatness that you won’t find at any of the larger festivals this summer.

I’ve enjoyed navigating the site in search of new music and found favorites with the Black Eyed Snakes, Jimmy Duck Holmes, .357 String Band, Jawbone, Black Diamond Heavies, just the tip of the festival iceberg. Actually, I could use your help navigating the line up, drop me a comment with some of your favorites that I should check out.

Tickets: $30 Single Day Ticket / $75 Weekend Pass

The Hood Internet vs. Chicago

Posted on Friday 30 May 2008

Sunny skies, green grass, cold beer. Summer is finally back! Now how to get the dance party started? Well, whether or not you know it, the perfect summer weekend soundtrack dropped this past Tuesday, for free at that. If you haven’t already, do yourself a favor and head over to visit our friends The Hood Internet and download their latest effort, The Hood Internet Vs. Chicago. The 24-track mix is the third installment of Chicago’s own DJ STV SLV and ABX, mashing up an impressive resume of Chicago based artists ranging from Kid Sister, The Cool Kids, Common, May or May Not, Smashing Pumpkins, Mahjongg, Lupe Fiasco and several others. You can download the tape for free either as a whole mix or individual tracks. I gotta give props to Cakecide, the Hollywood Holt/The Prairie Cartel number and the ridiculously danceable Watch My Big Feet, the Dude N Nem/Twista/Office mash. But my favorite? Superbowl Jesus, hands down—nobody can mess with Mr. West, Wilco and the 1985 Chicago Bears—mad rhyming skillz indeed.Download this mixtape. Now.

You can check their Mixtape release party at Sonotheque on June 19 and DJ STV SLV spin a set at Schuba’s on June 27.

Review: The Everybodyfields – Cafe Montmartre, Madison

Posted on Friday 30 May 2008

The Everybodyfields

I had a great time at Cafe Montmartre checking out The Everybodyfields last night. Some genuine folk tunes that reminded me a lot of Johnny and June Carter. That slide guitar action sure brought the southern sound right to the heart of our city. Hooked up another installment of our 5 Questions with Muzzle of Bees with Jill Andrews that I’ll be sharing with everyone sometime soon. Until then, go ahead and wrap your eyes and ears around their gorgeous take on Neil Young’s “Helpless” to end their set last night.

They’ve got a plethora of tour dates this summer, do yourself a favor and find a way to be in the crowd.

Madison Concert Announcement: Okkervil River

Posted on Friday 30 May 2008

Ok, I fully expect some indie kids to faint or spill on their American Apparel t-shirt with this announcement. After all, this band was the group who, based on your comments, one-upped The New Pornographers at the Orpheum here in Madison last month. They seem to make a habit of that. Anybody remember their blistering opening set before the Decemberists at the Barrymore a few years back? I do.

Okkervil River will play the Barrymore Theatre on Sunday, September 14th. This show comes only a week after the group releases The Stand Ins via Jagjaguwar on September 9th.

Tickets: $16.50 Advance / $18.50 Day of Show
On Sale: Thursday, June 5 at 10am

Benji Hughes :: A Little Extreme EP

Posted on Friday 30 May 2008

Benji Hughes

Prepare yourself for Benji Hughes, whose upcoming A Little Extreme EP on New West Records has landed in heavy rotation here at MoB HQ. Channeling comparisons to Beck and an upbeat version of Eels make this the perfect artist to leave you with for the weekend and in preparation for the summer.

Truth be told, the aforementioned EP is just a teaser to an upcoming double disc long player A Love Extreme on the same label. If these six tracks are the jump off for Benji Hughes material, consider me ready and willing to dive right into anything else he releases. For now, get your taste with the two free and legal MP3’s below and pick up A Love Extreme on June 22nd.

The Everybodyfields play Cafe Montmartre tonight. This show comes highly recommended to the masses who attended the Avett Brothers a few weeks back. Same label y’all.

Tickets: $10

Here’s their take on the always popular “Let It Be Me” which has been previously been covered by the likes of Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Nina Simone and David Hasselhoff. Good company!

Dual Hawks Special Edition

Posted on Wednesday 28 May 2008

Dual Hawks already got our We Like stamp of approval. As the release date (June 3rd) rounds the corner to less that a week, it was a welcomed surprise to find a message from Will Johnson in my mailbox this evening. Want some details on the special edition, read on Centro-Matic fans…

“Over the last twelve years, our band has been mighty lucky to chug along in as natural way as we could have hoped. We’re not particularly well known on a lot of levels, but we also haven’t experienced the slippery slope resulting from premature or undeserving gains. No one ever gave us nice hotel rooms before we felt like we deserved them, and the red wine and baby carrots and various backstage luxuries didn’t exactly show up too soon. Actually, they still don’t show up most times. But I guess we’ve managed to do this thing in workman like fashion. We march and roll and fly and sail on in our own sovereign, hands-on kind of way, and continue to have a real good time doing it, growing and learning as any family might together.

Our fans have taken good care of us over all those years and we’ve made a phenomenal amount of friends over many, many miles. Somehow things just get a little better with every passing year, too. It feels good to be able to say that. I guess perseverance, continued inspiration and love for one another can lead to that.

We’re about to release our 13th and 14th records next. Both of our bands, Centro-matic and South San Gabriel are included. The collection is called Dual Hawks. The idea of making it a double split release stemmed from the want to do something unusual but fan-friendly. In addition to that, we are assembling a limited special edition release, complete with a beautiful 30-page book full to the neck with the fruit of Matt Pence’s, Julie Miller’s and Mark Ray’s awe-inspiring talents. Matt’s phenomenal photography continues to exist as the perfect, rightful document of our bands’ life. His body of work holds the most fitting timeline of images I could ever hope to have represent this chapter of our lives together. Julie is a new friend of ours, a kind and devoted fan for some time now. After finally seeing some of her stunning work last year, we instantly knew that we wanted her involved with this release. She’s been very generous to contribute this endeavor. With the mix of Matt and Julie’s efforts, combined with our friend, Mark Ray’s always fitting and beautiful artwork, we felt like we had the right mix for this special edition release.

And so here we are. It’s an involved batch of music. There’s a good bit to sift through, and it’s against the grain at points. It begs a chunk of patience and time from its listener. But as far as I’m concerned, that’s the point of independent art. It’s not always convenient. It’s not always tidy and easy to categorize. That’s the kind of liberty we get to enjoy as a creative group of people fully in control of our own destiny. This is our ship. Why not paint it and sail it the way we want? Most importantly we feel like it’s the kind of release that’s specially designed for our friends and fans that have soldiered on with us over the years. so, to the mechanics of our spiritual engine, the painters and foundation supporters of our cottage industry, the sober drivers of our emotional fuel truck, and the night owls and guards of our sentimental forest, maybe see ya’ down the road!” — Will Johnson

Sound like something you want to support/pick up? Pre-order the deluxe edition for $35.00 before June 3, 2008 at Misra Records, $40 after the release.

Video: R.E.M. – “Supernatural Superserious” (ACL)

Posted on Wednesday 28 May 2008

Next Friday I’ll be heading to Chicago for the mega bill of R.E.M., The National & Modest Mouse. It will be my first time seeing R.E.M. (not counting standing outside their SXSW set at Stubb’s listening and contemplating a sneak in). Is anyone else seeing the Athens legends on the Accelerate tour? I haven’t been doing a good job of getting your opinion on the album. Was it the return to form you were hoping for or just better than its recent predecessors?

Share your R.E.M. concert memories and album favorites in the comments. I’ve already shared my love of New Adventures In Hi-Fi.

Here is “Supernatural Superserious” from their recently aired session on Austin City Limits:
