Kathleen Edwards played the Majestic Theatre last night performing material spanning her entire career, and debuting Asking For Flowers selections for the first time in Madison. As long-time Kathleen fans will remember, and as she reminded us last night, she’s played here before, first at the Club Tavern in Middleton and a few years ago opening for My Morning Jacket at the Annex on Halloween.
The band came to the stage in high spirits, spending the morning at the Farmer’s Market on the Capital Square and enjoying dinner at Muramoto nearby. The performance allowed the aforementioned Asking For Flowers material to sink in and take on new life away from just hearing it on a record, “I Make The Dough, You Get The Glory” certainly made a big impression. Though the new material was enthusiastically received the crowd demonstrated the most adoration for earlier selections like “Hockey Skates” and “Back To Me,” the latter highlighting the astounding guitar work of guitarist (and husband) Colin Cripps.
We had a great time at the Majestic last night, and hope everyone else did as well. It offered an opportunity for people to rock out if they wanted or sit back and enjoy a performance from their seat, which made for an all around enjoyable night for everyone involved. Also, let’s not forget the awe-inspiring opening set from Megan Hickey aka The Last Town Chorus, whose lap slide + ipod set was more than I think anyone expected (sans those who’d seen her before in town). Yes, she played “Modern Love” and also covered Gillian Welch over Culture Club (based on audience poll), which was great though I’d like to have heard her take on “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?” Next time I guess.
What did you guys think of the show? Did the Majestic meet your concert needs for the performance? What was the best song? What did you think of The Last Town Chorus?

I thought it was a great show. Kathleen and her band were in top form, and they really seemed to be enjoying themselves. When the band is having a good time, I think it makes them perform all that much better. I thought the Majestic was a perfect venue for them too..
Everything was so good it’s hard to pick a best song, but “Oh Canada” just kicked. As I wrote on my website, the way the band played it reminded me of Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Of the slower songs, I liked “Hockey Skates.” the best. Outstanding show!
