We’ve been trying to keep you updated on the return of the SoCo Music Experience to Willow Island and now the cat’s out of the bag: The Black Keys are going to play for free on Saturday, September 6th. This will be the first time Madison fans get a taste of the Tuesday’s Gold stamped Attack and Release.
So, while it might not be the only festival in Madison that month - it’s a move forward! Right? No?
Is advertising for an alcoholic beverage different than advertising for VW? Both bad? Both good? Which do you think pays better? Do you resent artists that used to play tiny clubs and now make thousands playing for thousands of drunks in a field? Should we be happy when bands make some $$$ or do you want them to remain poor and “indie”?
Thanks to Dave for the tip!

Is VW putting on a festival in Sept.? Plus, who’s going to be playing with the Black Keys? Someone with a larger or smaller marquee name?
Having put my concert money towards festivals rather than club shows as of late, my feeling is that I don’t care if bands are playing to more people. Lollapalooza’s not full of drunks, thankfully, and I’ve had my ears boxed enough by club PAs to prefer festival sound systems, anyways.

The SoCo website lists GZA, Benevento Russo, & DJ Star Eyes as well the Keys.
Quick correction: the festival is September 6th.
Along w/ the Madison Roots festival and the headliner G Love & Special Sauce, this is turning out to be a pretty good summer for Madison music.

i can’t imagine they’ll be the headliners. it’ll be great to have them out for the drunkfest no doubt, but i can’t imagine they won’t add someone bigger to headline. even gza seems a bit lacking.
plus i can’t imagine the fit the madison pd are going to throw when they find out there’s a huge party to drink alcohol and listen to hiphop.

Yeah, not that the Black Keys aren’t great and all, but they aren’t exactly on par with the Flaming Lips for draw.
Personally, I would be happier seeing Queens of the Stone Age again. I was really impressed by their set when they opened for NIN at Alliant.
And what else is going on in September? Not that there aren’t enough cross-links on MoB, but fill us in!

Regarding the alcohol marketing issue: you can either have events like the SoCo one with crap watered down expensive drinks, or you can do like Jack Daniels does with their “Live from Studio 7″ series. Small clubs, cool bands, lots of free drinks and a good atmosphere.
I was at the Flaming Lips one last year and, as much as I love FL, it seemed like a corporate event for SoCo employees. Rather than think “Wow, this is free”, I was more like “It’s a damn good thing this event is free”. *CLINK CLINK* Two cents dropped.

Dear August here…missed last year’s, Flaming Lips would have been fun to catch but I think the Black Keys should be good as well. We will be playing at the sober hour of 2:15 this year. Have to keep ourselves in line as we are at the Crystal later that night. But, I figure a free show can’t hurt anyone, and we’ve never played an “island” before!
