Video: Tom Waits – “Hold On”

“Well, go ahead and call the cops. You don’t meet nice girls in coffee shops.” Favorite records of all time? Mule Variations makes my list. What makes your list? What records have you rediscovered lately?

This song is so sublime. I linked to it a couple weeks ago for much the same reasons. I love how it starts almost exactly like “I don’t wanna grow up”, but then flips to this atmospheric gem. Just superb. Thanks for posting

However, when it comes to Tom Waits, nothing beats Bone Machine in my book.

I recently came back to Small Change, mainly because of my memories of listening to “Tom Traubert’s Blues” and “The Piano Has Been Drinking” as a kid.

My whole “re-discovery” of Tom Waits was more or less due to the fact that Mule Variations was released on Epitaph’s ANTI- label. Back then I was all about the punk, and “Big in Japan” was a track on one of Epitaph’s samplers. That lead me to get the CD and also browse through my parents’ old LPs.
