We Like :: Dual Hawks (Centro-Matic + South San Gabriel)

Arriving by Misra Records on June 3rd comes Dual Hawks, capturing the dual musical persona’s of Will Johnson and crew. If you’re a fan of previous Centro-Matic or South San Gabriel outputs, this one comes right down the ole wheel house (Fort Recovery anyone?). Hey, you don’t have to take our word for it, Patterson Hood calls them his top special.

I’m especially smitten with the South San Gabriel disc, simply can’t get enough of the haunting slower tracks that would soundtrack any drive light on conversation, heavy on the internal monologue. Take our recommendation on this one kids, it’s one of the best things we’ve heard this year. Get two new tracks below for free and legal download.

Centro-Matic last played Madison at the now defunct King Club, a rocking show sprinkled with baseball banter – that’s all fine with me. Maybe you were there?

I completely agree, this album is one of the best things to come out this year. Being from Austin, I’ve seen Will Johnson more times than I can count. He played a lot of this stuff in very different forms, especially Emma Jane, at his solo shows, so it’s nice to see it get all ensembled-up.

I really couldn’t get into “Trust to Lose” though! It was interesting and all, and I could understand them releasing that as the free song, because it demonstrates some of the new material best, but I would’ve preferred to post “Kept On The Sly” on my own blog; it’s the most like “The Carlton Chronicles,” which has since become my one of my favorite records. Oh well, at least the albums are solid.

I agree, John. “Trust to Lose” is a tough one to get into. Mostly because it sounds like a segue song. But you’re right about “The Carlton Chronicles”…fantastic from start to finish!
