I was never a big Coldplay fan before, I still only recognize a few of their songs. But, the stuff I’ve heard from Viva la Vida (namely the title track) has converted me. I am so in love with this song. What I do know of Coldplay, I like. I think their lyrics are profound and their music seems to me very innovative.

I used to listen to the first two records constantly. These days, I involuntarily cringe whenever I hear them. I think there are a few reasons for this. One, I used to work with a guy who thought Coldplay was better than every band in the history of music. The lameness of this person and his claim gave the band a permanent stink to me, like a dog that always rolls in something before coming in the house. Two, I can’t help thinking every song after “Rush of Blood” is somehow about Gwyneth Paltow. Three, the band got way over-hyped. It’s no one’s fault. These things just happen. Four, Chris Martin’s falsetto grates on me after a while. I’d like him to try snarling a bit more often. Five, I should probably get back to work.

Thanks to HBO’s awesome use of ‘rush of blood to the head’ to promote the third (?) season of six feet under, I’ll be eternally obligated to be a coldplay fan. But yeah, I wasn’t so much for X+Y either as much as the first two albums.

I love Coldplay, even if they are not one of the most critically or artistically acclaimed bands in the universe.

Some of their stuff has been really good and some has been very average. The comparision to Radiohead has really hurt them. They have never been close to the quality of Thom Yorke and Co. but it was always an impossible standard to hold them to.

I didn’t care for their last album, but Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head are both really good albums.

I don’t think they are the next U2 or Radiohead, and never did, but I agree with Jon… hating Coldplay is chic, and more of their stuff has been good then bad.

Hating Coldplay is akin to elitism: “I’m soooo indie–Coldplay is just wannabe Radiohead–and I’m pretty much too indie for Radiohead now too.”

I hate that kind of crap. Chris Martin is a downright decent songwriter and I’d say that I have enjoyed at least 80% of what the band has released (which is a pretty high percentage for any band).

I’d agree that that albums have gotten progressively less interesting, but from what I’ve heard of Viva, I’m pretty excited.
