It’s been some time since I’ve spun through The Mountain Goats’ Heretic Pride. Pitchfork’s announcement of their upcoming tour dates reveals their return to the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee w/Kaki King on Tuesday, October 14th.
Discuss: What is your favorite Mountain Goats release? Where and when have you seen The Mountain Goats live?

Sunset Tree is hard to top for me. I listened to it non-stop and it’s pretty tied to all my memories of that year.

my favorite goats album is “the coroner’s gambit.” i had to go old school on this one. as far as the 4AD releases go, “tallahassee” is still my favorite.
i’ve seen the mountain goats live twice, now, and both shows were absolute events. for a band that constantly gets pegged as “hyper-literate folk-rock,” charisma oozes out of darnielle’s pores every time he performs, whether he’s got his foot on the monitor(!) or is stepping to the front of the stage to sing a quiet song sans microphone.
my first one, i was in front-row, center stage for the whole show. john dropped his pick, i picked it up and handed it to him mid-song.
the second time, i was standing right by the backstage door and the bouncer let me stand in front of it to get a better view. standing in the doorway was ben gibbard. i met him and his girlfriend, got a pic, and watched as john asked him to sing “palmcorder yajna,” a song that ben covered on his solo tour, along with the band. before the second encore(!), john was going backstage, and i screamed, “YOU’RE MY FUCKING HERO, JOHN!” he gave me dap.
mountain goats shows, for one reason or another, have always been an absolute lock for “show of the year” for me.

I’ve never seen them live, but along the way, I’ve picked up a few mp3s of their live shows and I can imagine how wonderful a show would be. My fave track would have to be the first MG song I heard, which was “No Children”.

indie.mom, “no children” is the absolute climax of their show. EVERYONE sings the song at the top of their lungs. it’s really great.

My favourite album (thus far) is easily “All Hail West Texas” — Songs like ‘Color in Your Cheeks’ and ‘The Mess Inside’ will always be held dear to my heart.
