Ryan has proven to be more technology savy than I with his Live blogging throughout the day yesterday, so forgive me for posting this a little late. . .
Yesterday was a hot one, with more Bud Light breaks than H20 stops, feeling a bit dehydrated and worn out but still ready to go for Day 2. I had a bit of a late start yesterday, but caught the last few tracks of the Kills set, including my personal fave from Midnight Boom, “Cheap and Cheerful.” Strolled by the opening numbers of the entertaining Gogol Bordello, and while I’m not exactly a huge fan, the accordion action and liveliness of the show was pretty rad.
Other than the obvious awesomeness of Radiohead and Bloc Party, my two highlights were def Mates of State and CSS. Mates of State played a variety of newer material from Re-Arrange Us, and some older tracks as well including the jubilant poppy anthem “Goods, (All in Your Head),” “Whiner’s Bio” and a good handful of numbers from Bring it Back including “Like You Crazy.” Sooo much fun. Kori and Jason seemed to be having fun too, sporting black shades and matching outfits. Kudos to MoS for rocking a string section as well, the violin and cello were very nice touches to Kori’s keys and Jason’s drummin beats. Lots of singing along and jumping, def check this duo live if you get the chance.
CSS turned out to be a massive dance party, on the side concrete Citibank Stage. Lovefoxxx rocked the blue floral jumpsuit frock like nobody’s business and had the crowd jumping all over the place to newer tracks from Donkey, including “Reggae All Night,” “Rat is Dead (Rage),” and dispersed plenty of older hits along the way as well including the honkytonk fun “Alcohol” and “Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death from Above.” It was a nice dance party break, for sure–and a good warm-up to get ready for Radiohead who was well, awesome and the perfect ending to day one of Grant Park’s weekend of music and insanity.
