Lollapalooza : Saturday Recap

My body is seriously broken. I look like a lobster lady with my wicked sunburn and my feet haven’t been this busted up and blistered since my old roller rinking days of junior high. . . One more day to go and I’m not gonna let my foolish decisions of poor footwear and lack of sunscreen get in my way.

Kicked things off yesterday at Kidzapalooza with The Terrible Twos. I’ve been a pretty big fan of Matt Pryor since his days of fronting the Get Up Kids and now later, the New Amsterdams and his current solo project. Pryor started up the Terrible Twos with the other members of the Amsterdams to create a record he and his wife could listen to with their children without going crazy. And I gotta admit, it’s pretty damn catchy. It was hard to overlook the lyrical content (ranging from basic addition/multiplication to ladybugs), and the fact that I was surrounded by infants with neon colored mo-hawks but the stage was in the shade and it was like being at a New Amsterdams show so I dug it. If you’re worn out and need a smile back on your face, Kidzapalooza is the place to be–cheesey and fun.

After I got the kiddie out of me, we hiked over to check the Gutter Twins on the ATT stage and MGMT on MySpace. I’ve tried to get into both of these groups on separate occassions, but alas, I suppose it’s a bit to slow or psychadelic for my juvenille dance party ways. I did stick around ATT (Anyone else notice the irony that all ATT cell users have no cell service at Grant Park?? Seriously, the 10 texts 2 hours later all at once and mysterious voicemails–maybe ATT should have put more money and efforts into their service than cool Lolla stage logos. . .frustrating.) for the Brand New show to revisit my freshman/sophomore year of college memories. Weird how I knew every word to every song, there was some sort of beef or sickly admiration, couldn’t tell which between Brand New as they kept growling, “What are you even doing here, it’s time for Explosions in the Sky. . .” Weird.

Stumbled over to Spank Rock to get the booty shake on, then furthered down the way for the hometown bumpin’ beats of DJ Bald Eagle who not only rocked the crowd in a full bald eagle costume, but also brought out Chi-local hero Hollywood Holt to rhyme over his last few beats. It was hot. Good times, dance party city.

Then caught the last two songs of Okkervil River who I think I’m beginning to like a bit more the more I hear them, they were a good warm-up for Broken Social Scene. It was impossible to see all the members on stage at once, so I had to make do with what the big screens showed me. Man, Brendan Canning sure looks old. Sad to miss any sign of Miss Feist or Miss Haines, I didn’t think any of the lovely starletts were going to be accounted for until they finally introduced Miss Amy Millan for her vox action on “Shorelines.” This was my first time with the infamous Canadian troupe and I gotta say it was the perfect soundtrack to a nice and sunny summer day. BSS kicked off their set with my fave track from “You Forgot it in People,” the instrumental number “Pacific Theme.”

I’ve been a pretty big fan of both RATM and Wilco for years now, but I didn’t think either could out-do BSS for me and my feet were screaming for me to turn in early. My friends came back later and told me I was a fool for missing out on Rage, but did admit that the crowd was kind of intense with some crushing action. Not too remorseful about getting out before that. But here I am on Sunday, Day 3, and all fresh faced and ready to go. On the list? Iron & Wine, Girl Talk and Kanye, just to name a few. . .
