Last night’s She & Him performance was a little different than our other recent encounters with M. Ward. Of course, this show was all about showcasing the gorgeous pop melodies/vocals of Zooey Deschanel. MoB photographer Ed Oliver captured some shots below. What did you think of the show? What covers did they play?

I thought the show was amazing although a little disappointing in that it was only an hour long set. Zooey sounds better live than she does on the album. They also played some new songs which were as good, if not better, than the Volume One stuff. Overall, awesome and can’t wait to see them again.
I know they did a Joni Mitchell cover, can’t remember the others.

It was exciting that we got to hear “I Should’ve Known Better” since they said they don’t normally perform that one. I agree that their new stuff sounded great, it will be fun to keep watching them!

Great show. Zooey was enchanting. Her voice is so unique, and so perfectly fitted for those songs.

The show was awesome, but the guards were pricks. Matt and Zooey did not come out to sign autographs, which bummed me out because I’ve met Matt before but will probably not get to meet Zooey. I have a setlist, but I know they added two extra songs to the encore. I should’ve known better and.. the last one they did, I’m not sure.
It was cool they played Matt’s “Magic Trick” together.

They also covered “You Really Got a Hold On Me” by Smokey Robinson.

Zooey sang “You Turn Me On I’m a Radio” by Joni Mitchell, after telling the crowd that, at a recent gig in Chicago, she’d announced the tune to horrifying seconds of silence. Matt joked, “Chicago hasn’t heard of Joni Mitchell!”, put up his hands, and shrugged. Comedy gold, right? Anyway, he didn’t say much more than that. It seemed that Ward would rather shine the spotlight on Zooey, which is great, but it also made the moment in “I Should of Known Better” when he stepped forward to sing his part– “That when I tell you that I love you…”– the whole place got the chills, and erupted immediately after into helpless yelps. Wow.
They ended the show, fittingly, with a cover of the Carter Family’s “Lonesome Pine Special.” It was a nice, neat show with some beautiful harmonies. All on stage were clearly having a blast, especially Zooey, who kept jumping up and down, flailing her arms like a kid. She was also gorgeous. Consider me bewitched.

I think that someone mentioned it but the Smokey Robinson cover of “You Really Got a Hold On Me” is good enough for the girls you go with.
