Though festivals are always a great atmosphere and Pitchfork was great, you can’t really beat Bon Iver at the Pabst. Best concert of the year thus far (with many more excellent shows to come at the Pabst).

  2. Kelly Says:

The most moving concert of the year was for me, the Radiohead show at Lollapalooza. All time favourite band, glorious night, awesome people all around us, my friend Kim, and fireworks during the beautiful set that brought us to tears during Fake Plastic Trees. Never again will that exact moment be replicated.

  3. Sam Says:

my favorite show of the year was definitely death cab in Millenium park this last may. A thick as soup fog rolled into Millenium park and turned the skyline into a diffusion of soft light. I swear, it felt like we were standing on a pier in Seattle. Perfect show.

  4. Nick Says:

Fleet Foxes on the Memorial Union Terrance. Drove over an hour to see them and would drive 3 or 4 times the distance.

    Beautiful harmonies.
    Perfect weather.
A drummer that is amazing that there are fireflies in Wisconsin.

…and perhaps the best part of the night, Robin Pecknold breaking out into “Digital Love” by Daft Punk. The guy next to me yells out, “More Daft Punk! Do ‘Aerodynamic’ with your voices!” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re0K8XY_rPw

Oh, how I wish they would have taken the request.

  5. Tyler Says:

I would have to say Battles at Lollapalooza was the best all year, replicating their songs live was an amazing feat to watch. Plus John Stanier was a beast on the drumset AND it was his birthday!

  6. Todd J Says:

I have to go with DeVotchKa at Turner Hall. Lots of good concerts this year but this one sticks out to me. The atmosphere of Turner Hall along with the musical vibe put out by Nick Urata and crew was about perfect. (not to mention scantily clad acrobats and the always fantastic tuba player)

  7. James P Says:

Yeasayer and Man Man last spring top my list. Anytime a Man Man dance party breaks out, I’ll be there. Although Deerhunter in November will give them some stiff competition…

  8. Alap Says:

does one that i haven’t gone to yet this year but went to last year and i’m posolute is going to just as rousing when they play here again in october? if so, i would have to say the mountain goats.

  9. Andrew Says:

Oh man it is hard to pick just one for me. Does a three way count? Fleet Foxes in the basement of a dorm at Grinnell College in the middle of nowhere Iowa, Bon Iver at First Ave. and the Flaming Lips at the 80-35 Festival in Des Moines.

  10. Roland Nimis Says:

Sigur Ros at Bonnaroo at 2 AM was my favorite, probably of all time. People were still cheering the sound crew while ‘Ye was supposed to have started.

  11. Will R Says:

so many to choose from. my favorite would have to be wolf parade at the house of blues. i can’t wait to see sunset rubdown and then wolf parade again in madison.

  12. Mandy Says:

Josh Ritter at high noon was amazing. I didn’t want it to end. Added bonus: discovering Dawn Landes.

  13. jason Says:

1st. fleet foxes at the high noon….EPIC.
2nd. fleet foxes at the terrace.

there’s been a really solid string of shows in madison this year (why?, jens, weakerthans, phospherescent, ,bon iver, etc, etc.) really the best i’ve seen the city show wise, but FF are just heads and shoulders above everyone else.

  14. Ethan B Says:

4 and 1/2 hours of MMJ at midnight at Bonnaroo in the pouring rain? Thats what live music is all about.

  15. sir jorge Says:

Bad Religion @ El Corazon (a 500 capacity venue) here in seattle. Best show ever! It was last weekend.

  16. Trubes Says:

bon iver @ madplanet on a ludicrously cold january night. nothing warms the soul more than listening to them live…

  17. Ben E. Says:

I hate to copy another commenter, but Bon Iver at the Pabst was incredibly special. Not only because the music was simply stunning, the melodies soaring within the theatre, and the group just pouring heart and soul into the show, but because Justin’s family, and friends were there–supporting a man who, in the space of a year and a half, has gone from downtrodden winter hermit to the best musical act out of the Midwest in recent memory.

When they ended the show covering “Lovin’s For Fools,” I’m positive there wasn’t a soul in that room that didn’t feel like breaking down in tears of joy and emotion. What a night.

  18. Nick Says:

Big Business opening for the Melvins at the High Noon Saloon. The addition of Toshi Kasai on guitar took them from a great live band to a spectacular one.

  19. Val Says:

Magnetic Fields at Town Hall in February. There was just something amazing about hearing all the Distortion songs stripped down and acoustic.

  20. Nick F. Says:

Joanna Newsom was glorious at Brooklyn Academy of Music.

  21. Chris Says:

the last time i was in madison i saw a sleeping in the aviary show at the frequency and everyone was going nuts.

also, in seattle, the black kids and cut copy. dance party. enough said.

  22. Sharpless Says:

I’ve got to go with Radiohead at Lollapalooza, as well. Such a visually and sonically beautiful and engaging show. A band at the top of their game, doing what they do best. An amazing experience.

  23. Dynamic Meter Says:

Neko Case at the State Theatre in Ithaca, NY last winter. She was out road testing new material. It was a short 6 date tour so I felt really lucky to get a glimpse at her new material.

  24. Luke Says:

Girl Talk at Lollapalooza….I have never seen so many articles of clothing laying on the ground after a show

  25. Matt Says:

Tom Waits in St. Louis…no doubt.

  26. Jason Says:

For me the highlight so far was Yacht/Vampire Weekend at the Turner Hall Ballroom. I can’t think of anything more fun than joining in on a mosh started by Yacht himself. Just insane fun! And Vampire Weekend, just before they became subject to the “blog backlash” were great. High energy, fun, and lots of jumping. A great show in a great venue creates a great memory.

  27. Ryan Says:

For sure Bon Iver at the Stagedoor. That darkened theatre-middle of the crowd rendition of “For Emma…” Sigh. Magic.

  28. Andrea Says:

My favorite concert of the year was Tom Waits in Phoenix, Glitter and Doom was amazing! You can read more about it here …

  29. Bruce Says:

The Hold Steady at the Majestic. Close second – DBT @ the Pabst.

  30. Tim Says:

lucero at turner because Ben was drunker than me

  31. Ben Says:

Radiohead at Lollapalooza was epic but I have high hopes for Sigur Ros this Friday night in Boston.

  32. Manish Puri Says:

Jens Lekman, Bon Iver and Jay May on the same Bill at the Scala in London. Ok not so much Jay May but Jens and Bon were incredible.

  33. adam Says:

absolutely, without a doubt, King Khan @ Johnny Brenda’s in Philly

  34. Jace Says:

Tom Waits in Knoxville… I love that man. I came home from the show and made a playlist of that night’s setlist and listened to it again with eyes closed imagining the visual wonder of the previous night. And this just barely edges out a miraculous ticket I got for Radiohead placing me about 30 feet away from center stage.

  35. Mikey Says:

of montreal set’s at langerado is my favorite show i’ve seen this year. during the set closer “the past is a grotesque animal,” kevin barnes came out in a coffin full of shaving cream and climbed into the crowd. i got a face-full of shaving cream, courtesy of barnes’ left hand. so awesome.

  36. Derek Says:

Tom Waits in Houston. I have never experienced anything like that concert. An epic event.

  37. reo Says:

1.the raveonettes @ the double door, chicago.
2.jeremy jay @ the project lodge
    3. xiu xiu @ the high noon

  38. Jorge Says:

My favorite show of the year thus far was probably Sigur Ros at the Grand Ballroom in NYC in June… it was my 1st time seeing them and it was ethereal!

  39. Core Says:

    Tom Waits in St. Louis

    And/Or:

The Melvins at the High Noon.

Both shows were mind bending legends.

  40. Julia Says:

Liz Phair playing Exile in Guyville at the Hiro Ballroom. We sang every word with her!

  41. nate Says:

two shows are very close..both at the pabst in milwaukee: jens lekman, and the mountain goats. stoked for darnielle’s return next month

  42. Emily Says:

Damn, I guess I’m a third for Bon Iver at the Pabst … which just shows how great it was. “Lovin’s For Fools” was absolutely haunting, AA Bondy was a great opener. But my absolute favorite part was “Wolves”, especially the stripped-down percussion. Hands down the most awesome show I saw all year. And it was on my birthday!
