The new album is a NEW one. I suppose that it's natural to have expectations, but to find that something has failed because it's not like its predecessor is just--I dunno....blank and narrow. I think that album was easily one of his strongest lyrical efforts ("Strawberry Wine", "Carolina Rain"). Not a whole lot of people can pull of songs like that, but Ryan does. Cardinology is a little underwhelming, but i still like it. It is better than Easy Tiger, if only for Tom Schick's production. It doesn't have the bite of some of his previous albums, but I think the new album is definitely worth a spin and has some excellent songs ("Crossed Out Name", "Stop", etc). Cardinology takes some time to sink in. I felt the same way with Easy Tiger, which I listen to a lot more now than I did when it first came out.
