Things I’m Looking Forward To in the New Year

By Pete Donahue

With every new year, there are always new happenings in the music world that we all look forward to. Here are some pertaining to some of my favorite bands, based on blogs, studio diaries, etc. Basically realistic things (as in it’d be great if Morrissey came over and we played board games and he told me about the good old days of the Smiths, but that probably won’t be happening…in 2009 at least).

(In no particular order)

01. New Cribs album with Johnny Marr as a member
From what I’ve read so far, the whole thing has been written and they are going to record it after their upcoming UK tour. I like the Cribs a lot, but Johnny Marr is my favorite guitarist of all-time. I can’t wait to hear how his style will fit in with the Cribs’ rougher rock and roll sound.

02. New Klaxons album
I’ve read a few things where the band claim they are expecting to finish the follow-up to the awesome 2007 debut Myths of a Near Future. I think I also read a while back that the new album is going to be produced by Tony Visconti and will feature plenty of four-part harmonies, which is a major plus to the guys’ sound.

03. New Arctic Monkeys album
Word on the street is that they too should be done by the new year. They were working with Josh Homme on the new one, so that’ll be interesting.

04. New Yeah Yeah Yeahs album
They are kind enough to keep us updated on their Myspace page and then NME magazine makes a big deal about whenever the band posts anything. But I’m definitely looking forward to that album.

05. Possible new Strokes album?
I keep reading here and there that the band are set to “get together” in February to start hammering out the new album. I don’t know if it’s been written already and they just have to work out arrangements, or if they are ready to push record and go at it. I wonder if Little Joy and Nickel Eye are going to tour beyond January?

06. New Band of Horses album
According to their popular social networking site, they’ve already started recording it. Here’s to them coming to Milwaukee this year.

07. Blur’s reunion
(No explanation needed)

08. Possible new Elefant album?
I think they are still together, though they’ve been pretty secret about what they are up to. Last I knew singer Diego Garcia was going to work on a solo album, but now he’s got solo dates listed on Elefant’s Myspace page, so maybe it’s going to be a full Elefant album? I hope so.

09. New Franz Ferdinand
It comes out in January 26th in the UK, so I hope we get it the 27th. So far, what I’ve heard sounds great.

10. New Mew album
So they’re are pretty far into it according to their website, so that’d be nice if it came out this year.

11. New Fleet Foxes album
They say they are already working on it and the songs have been written. Awesome.

12. Noel Gallagher solo album?
So he pretty much said it’s going to happen once Oasis finish touring. Maybe it comes out in 2009?

13. Further updates on what Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are up to….

Discuss: What albums/releases are you excited about in 2009?

New Doves album. New Dirty Projectors.

  2. Trubes Says:

a resounding ditto to those 2. also:

    Animal Collective
    Andrew Bird
    St. Vincent
    Wilco
    The National (please?)
    Yeasayer (?)

And yes, a Sufjan update would be much appreciated.

  3. Al Says:

Looking forward to Neko Case, The Doves, Trashcan Sinatras, Morrissey, and however many Robert Pollard releases.

  4. cerca trova Says:

Definitely looking forward to anything new from Bon Iver, as well as a new Wilco album. Otherwise, I like what you’ve put together with your list.

  5. Marc Says:

I’m surprised that your not looking forward to the new Wilco album considering the name of your blog.

  6. Dan Says:

Heard Kings of Leon are already looking at a new record, and taking it in a different direction from OBTN.

  7. Szabe Says:

Some band from Vermont is playing some shows next year…

  8. Todd Says:

Above all I would say the new Grizzly Bear album is the most exciting

  9. Phil Says:

The new Great Lake Swimmers record is at the top of my list then… Fleet Foxes and Band of Horses… like someone mentioned hopefully something new from The National would be outstanding! And what I’ve heard off the new Andrew Bird record is amazing! So looking forward to those things… and of course Wilco (apologies for the spacey writing).

  10. Barbara Says:

I love bon iver, foxes, grizzly bear…so I’m definitely looking forward to anything new they put out in 09.

But my excitement for the new Avett Brothers album far surpasses any of those. With Rick Rubin as their new producer, and a trove of great sounding new songs they’ve been playing on tour (e.g. Laundry Room, More of You, I & Love & You), this one’s gonna be special!

  11. Ethan B Says:

Def down with that band from VT. I hear that small band might headline two nights of that small fest in Tennessee (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3Yv1N6JOus&feature=related) with some band from the Jerzzzz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5hgaIMDNpI&feature=related)

  12. Adam Says:

    Battles, Animal Collective.

And that band from Vermont Szabe was talking about.

  13. uwmryan Says:

Great topic, I’m excited about new ones from:

    Bill Callahan
    Wilco
    Avett Brothers
    Bruce Springsteen
    Phosphorescent :: To Willie
    Yo La Tengo
    Sonic Youth
    Magnolia Electric Co.
    U2

  14. aburtch Says:

The Avett Brothers new album!!! They are the best thing going in roots music today period.

  15. Dan Says:

Oh yeah, not to mention how slick M.Ward’s new album is goin to be…

  16. ChrisD Says:

Neko Case, Doves, Loney Dear in that order.

  17. ChrisD Says:

Oh, Idlewild as well. Though I haven’t been a huge fan of their last few releases, I like 100 Broken Windows as much as any album released this decade and always hold on to the hope that they will come close to that high water mark again.
