The Rural Alberta Advantage were unknown to me prior to walking into the Central Presbyterian Church in Austin last month. They were opening for Grizzly Bear and what a pleasant surprise they were. I picked up a copy of Hometowns recently and have since been pretty enamored with it.
Comparisons tend to create great expectations, but I keep hearing Jeff Magnum in this guy’s voice. Take a listen to a couple tracks from the album below, and don’t be afraid to pull the trigger on the entire album – totally solid.

It’s good to see more people getting into The RAA. Hometowns is such a great, underappreciated album.

we recently had RAA into the studio. In addition to putting out a great album, Nils, Amy and Paul are great people. They are most certainly heading in the right direction.

I’m a big fan as well…we need to get them to Madison soon!

I am in the same boat. I had never heard of them but then enjoyed their set at SXSW. I’ve been meaning to get their album for a while now.

Saw these wonderful folks twice at SXSW and most recently at Schubas last week opening for the Spinto Band. They had a solid, very excited crowd to play to…a great show. I had a chance to visit with them before their set and Amy, Nils, and Paul couldn’t have been nicer. I have a hunch 2009 will be their year.

Wish I would have known about that Schubas show – would have loved to have made that.
Perhaps we’ll get them to Wisconsin on the next go round.

I totally agree with your assessment of RAA. I wasn’t getting into it either until I put it on while painting a room at my daughter’s new house. Then I played it five times in a row!
