From The Crowd: Strand of Oaks – “Two Kids”

Posted on Thursday 23 April 2009

Now months after association, I still listen to Strand of Oaks Leave Ruin on the regular. It is without a doubt my favorite release of the year, and I think the couple dozen of people who caught his set at Cafe Montmartre on Easter Sunday know just how special Tim’s live shows are. I took the above video at the aforementioned Madison play, though the low lighting conditions don’t render much of an image, you certainly can get a taste of how great the song “Two Kids” is.

While you’re in the watching and listening mood, I’d suggest you take a look/listen to the video of “Sister Evangeline” from Green Line Cafe in Philadelphia.

Tonight in Madison: Great Lake Swimmers

Posted on Thursday 23 April 2009

Tonight marks the return of the Great Lake Swimmers to the High Noon Saloon. Muzzle of Bees is proud to help present tonight’s show. If you’re looking for a great next purchase, my suggestion would be the latest from Great Lake Swimmers, Lost Channels. Their song “Pulling On A Line” is easily one of my favorite jams of the year.

Please get there early as MoB favorites and Milwaukee natives The Championship were handpicked to get the night started. Tickets are only $12 and kicks off tonight at 9PM.

Madison Concert Announcement: The Felice Brothers

Posted on Wednesday 22 April 2009

How great is this? The Felice Brothers return to the University of Wisconsin campus with a free play at The Terrace on Saturday, May 30th. I’ve seen these guys plenty, most recently in Austin where they covered both Elton John and Townes Van Zandt. Talk about my speed. On top of that, they’ve got a new long-player out called Yonder Is The Clock that comes with a hearty Muzzle of Bees stamp of approval. Get a taste/listen with a free download of “Run Chicken Run” below.

Madison Concert: Laura Gibson + Rock Plaza Central

Posted on Wednesday 22 April 2009

It’s nice to see that Laura Gibson will be coming back to Madison. I fell hard for her stuff when she opened for Great Lake Swimmers last year. This year, she’s released one of the year’s finest with Beasts Of Seasons. Seriously, pick that up.

Laura Gibson, Rock Plaza Central, and Musee Mecanique will all play the High Noon Saloon on Sunday, June 7th.

Tickets: $8 Advance / $10 Day of Show

Review: Dan Deacon – Che Cafe, San Diego

Posted on Wednesday 22 April 2009

By Jake Feala

Probably the most absurd moment out of a night of absurd moments was during the dazed march out of the Che Cafe, through eucalyptus trees on the trail to the parking lot, when the guy walking in front of me awkwardly asked his date “So… did you like the show?” I didn’t catch what she said but the correct response would have been “Yes, you idiot, I was in the crowd, wasn’t I?” Seeing Dan Deacon and his enormous backing band in a crowded outdoor cafe on the woodsy edge of the UC-San Diego campus does not elicit feelings that fall into the categories “Like” or “Dislike.” More appropriate categories would be “WTF just happened” or “Is this real life?

Dan Deacon brought the party and we did what he told us. Get in a circle for a Fancy-Dance-Off? Ok, Dan! Human bridge around the outside of the building? You got it, Dan! Catch members of the band as they stage dive off the roof? Jesus Christ, Dan! Ok! I guess! All of the craziness was, of course, soundtracked by his signature synth hooks sprinkled with xylophone and driven by beats so fast that dancing inevitably devolves into frenetic hopping, leaving everyone in the building with smiles and sore calves.

I am sleepwalking through an unbearable day of work today, with flashback visions of a flashing green skull and the melody to Wham City on a loop in my head, but of course it was worth it. I hope that girl denies that guy a second date for asking such a stupid question.
