Two MoB favorites played Madison last night. Sadly, I missed both of them. Drop a comment and let me know if you caught The Hold Steady or Black Joe Lewis. What were the highlights of the show you saw?

Bare Bones & Branches

bare-bones-brances

Sometimes revisiting old favorites is necessary. Today, I wanted to re-post an old favorite, recently returned to heavy rotation. Released in 2005, Lewis & Clarke’s Bare Bones & Branches was one of those diamond in the rough finds. Since discovery, I’ve found many other favorites by tracing their collaborators and friends.

Please take the time to download/listen to the title track, “Bare Bones and Branches” below. If you like what you hear, and live near Milwaukee, please join us at the Sugar Maple in Bay View/Milwaukee on Monday, August 3rd for a very special Lewis & Clarke show. It’s only $8. See you there.

Video: Blitzen Trapper – “Black River Killer”

Posted on Thursday 9 July 2009

Let’s try this again. The last time I posted this video it wasn’t quite ready for release. Now we’ve got the thumbs up to share it with you for real. “Black River Killer” comes via Blitzen Trapper’s Furrour favorite album of last year. Milwaukee friends can catch them in a couple weeks at the Pabst (7/20). I’ll be traveling the state of Montana later this month and Blitzen Trapper just happen to be playing The Filling Station/VFW in Bozeman while I’ll be there. I think I’m gonna have to check out out.

Count me as one of the many anticipating the next record from The Swell Season. Their show at Overture Hall in Madison last year wound up being one of the year’s best.

The Swell Season return on September 29th with the release of Strict Joy on Anti- Records. An interesting side note about the album is that MoB favorite, Doveman holds down piano duties and Clark Gayton from Levon Helm’s band is also on board.

STRICT JOY TRACK LISTING

1. Low Rising
2. Feeling the Pull
3. In These Arms
4. The Rain
5. Fantasy Man
6. Paper Cup
7. High Horses
8. The Verb
9. I Have Loved You Wrong
10. Love That Conquers
11. Two Tongues
12. Back Broke

Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros :: 40 Day Dream

Posted on Thursday 9 July 2009

You may recall the creepy/bizarre video I posted from Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros last month. As I said in that original post, their debut at SXSW this year was one that had all of Austin talking. Rightfully so. As a result, the band has signed on with Community Music and Fairfax Recordings for the release of their debut album, Up From Below.

Their sound recalls the late 60′s and front man Ed Sharpe has one of the best new voices in music. If you’re looking for a great new band with an album I have no doubt will be a huge success, go ahead and pick up a copy of Up From Below. You won’t be disappointed.
