Muzzle of Bees Video: Langhorne Slim – “Honey Pie”

Posted on Monday 21 December 2009

In September Langhorne Slim was in town staying with drummer Malachi DeLorenzo for a few days before heading out on tour supporting their fantastic new album, Be Set Free. We previously shared “Land of Dreams” and “Be Set Free” the first two videos from our multiple part video series that we were fortunate to capture in between radio appearances and a performance at the Exclusive Co. This time through, we are thrilled to present the live show staple, “Honey Pie,” which leaves just as quickly as it comes.

Langhorne Slim will play Turner Hall Ballroom in Milwaukee on Tuesday, January 26th.

Decade: Beirut | The Flying Club Cup (2007)

Posted on Sunday 20 December 2009

TheFlyingClub

For the remainder of 2009 we will be featuring albums that meant a lot to us this decade. I have really enjoyed spending quality time with my record collection and not just what is new and current. One thing this collection will not be is all-encompassing. We will be deliberately leaving out some of the universal favorites (Kid A, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Funeral, etc) because you’ll see them everywhere, and the last thing we want to do is state the obvious.

Instead, this collection will very much an outlet for us to share/discuss our favorites over the past 10 years with a focus on albums that we feel have been overlooked in the lists we’ve seen roll out this far.

Beirut | The Flying Club Cup (2007)

When “Postcards From Italy” hit the internet, Beirut and his album Gulag Orkestar became one of the most talked about emerging artists. It was hard to believe the young Zach Condon could be the source of such an incredible outpouring of musical mastery, but, as it turned out, Condon was only just beginning his craft.

When reading about Beirut it’s impossible to get through without descriptors like ‘gypsy,” “Mariachi” and “Balkan” used to describe the sound that is realized from the Santa Fe, New Mexico native. The Flying Club Cup was one of our favorite albums in 2007, and drew heavily from Condon’s French interest. The album features string arrangements by Owen Pallett, and was revolutionary in using Take Away Shows for each song on the album, thus catapulting the video creative buzz across online music outlets.

This was an album of great heights. It’s an album capable to transporting you to a different time or place. If you’ve had the good fortune of seeing these songs unfold in a live setting it’s about as close to perfection as one could ever ask. Again, like most of the albums that comprise our favorites from this decade, this is an album that is perfect from start to finish.

Conrad Plymouth – “Fergus Falls” (Live at WMSE)

Posted on Saturday 19 December 2009

Yesterday I linked to the above video on twitter saying “this is my song/video of the day, brilliance right here in Milwaukee.” A day later, with my head still groggy from the night before, it still sounds perfect to me. If you don’t yet know Conrad Plymouth, please become acquainted via the interweb. You will definitely be seeing/hearing more of their stuff on this site going forward. Until then, we recommend watching the above video in multiple doses.

Decade: Ryan Adams | Cold Roses (2005)

Ryan Adams | Cold Roses (2005)

2005 was a landmark year for Ryan Adams amongst a decade that found him releasing (by our count) elven albums. Yes, you read that correctly, eleven! Already a proficient songwriter, Adams upped the ante in 2005, releasing three albums, the first of which, Cold Roses, was also his first with the Cardinals, and arrived sporting cover art hat tipped in the direction of the Grateful Dead’s American Beauty. It wasn’t just the cover art that drew from the Grateful Dead’s influence, throughout two discs worth of material, Ryan Adams closely mirrored the guitar and feel of some of our favorite Grateful Dead albums. If you saw him live around this time, and he had his shit together, you certainly saw an artist firing on all cylinders.

I realize that picking Cold Roses as one of the best albums of the decade probably conjures up debate amongst Adams’ faithful followers and music critics in general, but it has remained, since first listen, the essential Ryan Adams album in my record collection. You see, Cold Roses is the album that brought me back to Ryan Adams. I was a huge fan of Heartbreaker and Gold, but his output that followed did little to excite me the way it once did. That changed when I bought Cold Roses, I knew just holding it in my hands that this was something special. I can distinctly remember running my fingers across the packaging that seemed crafted with extra care and attention – a feeling that even so many years ago already began to feel foreign in a rapidly rising digital age.

Cold Roses is a roller coaster ride of listen, one that keeps you hoping the operator lets you go around one more time around. It’s complete in the sense that over two discs and eighteen songs you’re hit with all that Adams can deliver. There are rock songs, slow songs, and songs that make you want to cry your eyes out. It’s a record for all occasions and sounds amazing on road trips.

MP3: Rocky Votolato – “Sparklers (Live In East Palo Alto)”

Posted on Thursday 17 December 2009

Rocky

A few years back I caught Rocky Votolato opening for Lucero at Mad Planet here in Milwaukee. If you’re not familiar with the Rocky Votolato catalog, a good place to start is 2006′s Makers.

Look for Rocky Votolato’s new album True Devotion (Barsuk Records) on February 23rd with a date at Schubas in Chicago a couple nights later on Friday, February 26th.
