John Prine :: Live

John_Prine

The weather in Wisconsin this time of year is nasty at best. It’s a pretty consistent cycle of show, shoveling, freezing, and daydreams of sunshine. I turn to a lot of singer-songwriters as the weather takes a turn for the uncomfortable. Songs that sound best grasping a hot cup of coffee, ones whose warmth in sound and simple structure get the point across just fine. I’ve had a couple of conversations with friends about John Prine over the past month. I’ve unearthed the records I own, borrowed some, and am seeking out the diamonds of his cannon not yet known to me.

Anyone who has spent time with a John Prine album or see the him live understands he’s equal part storyteller and musician. His songs are woven with tales of past adventures and friendships. It’s an intimacy that makes you feel like you know the man on a personal level because there’s no feeling or emotion held back. It’s that raw sound feeling that draws me in and keep me coming back. Stay warm.

John Prine plays the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet, IL on Thursday, March 4th.

    John was just on The Marty Stuart Show last Saturday night – they are probably still replaying it this week. He’s a bit weatherworn, but he’s still got it. http://www.martystuart.com/mss-1-2-10.htm

    Marty’s show is on RFD-TV, Saturday night at 7 – you can watch live country music and then a cattle auction. It’s quite a channel.

    John Prine at the Overture a few years back, with Leon Redbone opening, was one of the better shows I’ve ever seen. I was introduced to Prine at an early age, as he was one of my father’s favorite artists. I remember singing along with “Sam Stone” in the backseat of the car on a family vacation, thinking that the “hole in Daddy’s” arm was one of the funniest things there was.

    John Prine will be a guest with Lyle Lovett and Ray LaMontagne on this week’s “Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…”, this Wednesday at 9pmCST on Sundance Channel.
