Review: The Rural Alberta Advantage – Mad Planet

RAA 9

We had a great time checking out The Rural Alberta Advantage at Mad Planet last night. Since their last time through town, they’ve grown their audience and written some new material. The new stuff was pretty intense, with one track stretching Nils Edenloff’s vocals to the brink of a scream. The show definitely enhanced our appreciation for Hometowns, which, in our opinion, is near perfect from front to back. The acoustic cover of “Eye of the Tiger” was a nice surprise later in the set. I’m kicking myself today for not picking up the brand new “Drain The Blood” 7-inch vinyl.

It was my first time catching Milwaukee’s own The Fatty Acids, who reminded me of mix of Surfer Blood and the Black Lips. Hopefully everyone got there early to check out the greatness of Conrad Plymouth too. We were lucky enough to have CJ Foeckler in attendance last night who graciously offered up the photos you’re seeing here.

Discuss: What did you think of the show? Like the opening acts? Drop a comment with your thoughts/reviews on last night’s show.

Definitely was a great show. I was glad to finally see this drumming genius in person. I liked the new ones too, that second one seemed to really stretch his voice so I couldn’t get into it as much but overall they were great. Crowd was really into it too.

Also, yeah the openers were great. Conrad Plymouth had a solid crowd and they were all really into it, as well as for the Fatty Acids. Pretty diverse bill, but it all worked together really well.

I was really impressed with the crowd’s energy and The RAA certainly seemed to appreciate it. Here’s that new song with the stretching of the vocals. I enjoyed it. Anyone know what it’s called?

I thoroughly enjoyed the show and was especially excited that Milwaukee showed up for the show. I asked Nils if they had plans for the amazing song “Goodnight”(?) that they would normally close out their shows with, and he told me it’ll be on the next album.

Here is said song…video is crappy because it was played in the middle of the floor and the house lights were off, but the audio is superb. Maybe Mad Planet was too full to accomplish this or they ran out of time? Either way, if you haven’t heard this song yet, it’s simply amazing!

Loved the show. Had the same sort of feel/excitement as the Bon Iver show there 2 years ago. Don’t know if they will blow up like Justin did, but they’re worthy of it.
Really enjoyed The Fatty Acids, too; glad I caught them.
