Yeasayer :: Odd Blood

Odd Blood

Today, Yeasayer released their new album, Odd Blood, which is still working its way through my brain. The band has always been amazing live and bring those talents to the Majestic Theatre in Madison along with Sleigh Bells on Wednesday, April 28th. Odd Blood is currently available as a $3.99 digital download here.

Also out today is Hot Chip’s One Life Stand which was just given Best New Music props over at P4K. We’ve been big fans of their previous records and their live shows are always great. We’re leaning towards making the trek to Chicago to catch them and the xx at the Riviera on Friday, April 19th.

News:

The 2010 Pickathon Indie Roots Music Festival has just released their line up that is overflowing with Muzzle of Bees favorites. Scheduled to perform at Pendarvis Farm in Portland, Oregon from August 6-8 are Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Megafaun, The Heartless Bastards, Roadside Graves, The Cave Singers and Langhorne Slim. Yeah, that’s definitely a festival worth traveling to. Tickets are currently on sale here.

Horse Feathers will release Thistled Spring April 20th on Kill Rock Stars. We’ve loved every album Justin Ringle has put in front of us. Add this release to the list of our most anticipated releases of the year.

The Tallest Man On Earth returns to Milwaukee for a $10 show at the Pabst Theater on Tuesday, May 25th.

Muzzle of Bees Presents….

Posted on Monday 8 February 2010

Kentucky_Center_Ben_Sollee

Muzzle of Bees is proud to present some upcoming shows in Milwaukee and Madison, including two showcases celebrating our 5-years blogging, which is basically just an excuse to throw a party with some of our favorite bands. Come out and see some amazing music with us!

On Friday, February 19th we’ll be at the High Noon Saloon with our friends Juniper Tar, Common Loon, Strand of Oaks, and White Pines. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door and in advance soon at the venue’s website.

The following night (February 20th) we’re back home at the Cactus Club in Milwaukee with our friends The Daredevil Christopher Wright, Common Loon, Strand of Oaks, Conrad Plymouth, White Pines and The Small Cities. Tickets are $10 and available here.

On Thursday, March 11th we have Jeremiah Nelson, The Blueheels, Ragadors & Surgeons in Heat at the Up & Under in Milwaukee for $5.

Just last week we were praising the fantastic Dear Companion“>Dear Companion collaborative of Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore. They’ll be playing the Majestic Theatre in Madison on Saturday, April 3rd. Tickets are $15 and go on sale Friday, February 12th.

We are also pleased to present Jason Collett’s show at the Majestic Theatre in Madison on Tuesday, April 6th. Tickets for the show are $10 and on sale now. Jason has a new album Rat A Tat Tat coming March 9th, you can download the track “Love Is a Dirty Word” here.

News:

The Avett Brothers will play the Big Top Chautauqua in Bayfield, WI this summer on Friday, July 9th. The Avett Brothers 2009 release, I and Love and You was our favorite album of last year.

St. Vincent released a video for “Laughing With a Mouth of Blood” last week and comes to Milwaukee next week.

I’ve been on a heavy dose of Califone’s All My Friends Are Funeral Singers lately and have been enjoying two videos they did with Yours Truly in San Francisco earlier this year. Califone will open for Wilco at the upcoming sold out concert at Overture Hall in Madison on February 20th.

I really love the new Spoon video for “Written In Reverse.” That Chicago show with Deerhunter on April 1st is looking like a must see.

Video: Dr. Dog – “Mirror, Mirror” (new song)

Posted on Friday 5 February 2010

We’re anxious to hear new material from Dr. Dog’s forthcoming Anti- release, Shame, Shame, out April 6th. Last night in Milwaukee the band showcased new material (by my count) four new songs, including “Mirror, Mirror” which was captured by our photo/video contributor Daniel Brielmaier. If you’re holding tickets to tonight’s sold out show in Madison, arrive early as you don’t want to miss The Growlers.

Review: Los Campesinos! – “Romance is Boring”

Posted on Friday 5 February 2010

romanceisboring

By Tyler Fassnacht

New Music From Welsh Romantics

In Medias Res, the first track on Los Campesinos!’ new album, Romance is Boring, opens with a sprinkle of xylophone and builds up layers until it halts and is brought back to life like Frankenstein’s monster with deep industrial drum machines, only to end with blaring melodic horns that leave you feeling all tingly inside. This whirlwind of textures and different sounds is a good introduction to what this album has to offer.

The seven piece indie-pop band from Wales comes back with their third album, which is full of influences ranging from hardcore punk to baroque. Romance is Boring doesn’t bring any new cards to the table though, for Los Campesinos! have always been rather eclectic with their style and their new effort stays close to what the band is comfortable with, but it wouldn’t be wise to disregard the album as a different record of the same music. What Los Campesinos! have managed to do this time around, is refine all their techniques and pack all the catchy hooks and thick instrumentation that we are used to, into an album that is engaging from start to finish and at 48 minutes, the longest Campesinos! album yet, it still feels like it’s over too soon.

A major reason why this album is so enjoyable from start to finish is the clever placement of the slower, laid-back songs when the fast, sugary pop songs start getting too sweet. Tracks like “Who Fell Asleep in,” and “The Sea is a Good Place to Think About the Future,” show a more gentle side to Los Campesinos! that really tugs at the heart of the listener.

One thing that does get a little exhausting though, is the sheer amount of emotion packed into this album. Even though the title is Romance is Boring, Los Campesinos! still come across as the hopeless romantics who beam with joy when they get the girl and who sulk and mope when they don’t, both of which are common happenings throughout the album. Lead singer Gareth, sings lines like, “I think I’d do it for love if weren’t for the money,” “I remember being naked, but not in which direction,” and “I said ‘you’ve taken the diet too far, you’ve got to let it slip,’ she’s not eating again.” With blunt, brutally honest, heart-on-sleeve lyrics, Los Campesinos! hides behind their catchy, innocent sounding pop music, while singing angsty songs about sex, drugs, death and relationships. In fact, every song on Romance is Boring has something to do with romance or love in general, with some being positive and some negative.

Romance is Boring, is the edited, returned draft of the essay that is Los Compesinos! and they really have something to be proud of. For people who were never into the band, this album probably won’t win too many people over, but fans will fall head over heals for almost every song. If this is their take on boring romance, I don’t think I could handle what they would consider exciting.
