DJ Evil Vince :: Aotearoa Kauri [New Zealand Mix]

We are pleased to welcome the return of DJ Evil Vince to Muzzle of Bees. He will once again be providing compilations that unearth the music of the far off corners of the world. Which brings us to the current compilation: Aotearoa Kauri. This is defined as: Land of The Long White Cloud [New Zealand] Kauri [Tree].

Lived in New Zealand for a year and was blown away by how much quality music this little island nations produces. Do yourself and check out the kings of the scene. The recenty reunited Trinity Roots and Fat Freddys Drop are not to be missed. The Black Seeds,Cornerstone Roots and Che Fu are not slouches themselves. Kia Kaha

Fantastic mix. Really enjoying working to it right now. The .zip file that is posted only contains the first 9 tracks… Thanks for id3 tagging the mp3 files *and* naming them in order. Looking forward to the next one.

  3. Damian Says:

I’ve lived in New Zealand my whole life and I don’t know most of these songs. These largely represent the Dub/’Nesian/Hiphop music scene which is an acquired taste. IMO The Chills, The Clean, Toy Love, The Tall Dwarfs and all those great Flying Nun bands are more iconic New Zealand music.

I also have never left New Zealand (saving) and have heard of all these bands (if you’re going for that vibe I’d at least expect Shapeshifter) but LARGELY concur with Damian. How about current obscure stuff? Rackets, Street Chant, Nevernudes, Grass Cannons, Shipwreck, Golden Axe, Wet Wings, Glass Vaults, TFF, O’Lovely, Capsul, to name a few. And the ones who’ve been really well rated overseas; The Mint Chicks, Connan (and the) Mockasin(s), Surf City…

I hope that gives you something to go off.

This is all pretty new to me … But I am seriously digging the groove!

  6. Zora Says:

Yay for kiwi music! Missing Sola Rosa and Ladyhawke, as well as others mentioned above. Where is Connan these days anyways?!?!

  7. You Nomee Says:

    Connan’s currently here: http://www.myspace.com/tobeadad
And they have a free song on bandcamp too! http://barb.bandcamp.com/track/havin-a-baby

Sounds like Bob Marley Went West to Stir It Up & Put the Kiwi in the Coconut; I really like it.
