Tax Day Soiree With The Devil Whale

On Friday, April 15,  shed your tax day blues with Salt Lake City’s The Devil Whale as they make their Madison debut with a house show at the North Mendota Supper Club. Featuring lyrics by frontman Brinton Jones, the band has a vintage, yet forward-looking sound that will appeal to fans of Destroyer, Ryan Adams, and Frontier Ruckus. Their 2010 EP, Young Wives, randomly showed up in our mailbox last fall and we were immediately hooked. It should be a great, energy-packed show. Supporting The Devil Whale will be Count This Penny, a Madison duo transplanted from East Tennessee. Veterans of the club scene in Knoxville, Count This Penny is just starting garner a following in Madison, receiving a big push from ISTHMUS a couple weeks ago. If you like the Everybodyfields, the Civil Wars, or some old school Gram and Emmylou, you will dig Count This Penny. Doors open at 8:30 with a showtime of 9:00. An $8 donation at the door will get you in for this excellent double bill – send an email to nmsc1402@gmail.com for the address and other info.

Austin

Posted on Wednesday 6 April 2011

I wanted to take a brief moment to let you know that I’ve moved to Austin, TX. It wasn’t an easy decision, but the chance to try something new in a city I’ve always wanted to call home was too big of an opportunity for my wife and I not to pursue. Fear not, we’ll continue to do a good job of bringing you coverage of the Madison and Milwaukee music scenes. That being said, you can also expect me to be covering shows in Austin too. In fact, I’m very excited about seeing The Books at Central Presbyterian Church this Friday night. I suppose this is as good a time as any to say we’re looking for people to help us review concerts and albums. If you’re able and willing, please get in touch.

Yesterday was my first day as an Austin resident. I sold my car on Monday, made the 8th inning on of the Brewers opening day before flying here and settling into my apartment that I had the chance to get to know briefly during SXSW. I hit up Thundercloud Subs and Star Bar, purchased Infinite Jest at Book People, and spent a good hour perusing the vinyl selection at Waterloo Records. I finally purchased Deerhunter’s Microcastle on vinyl – and then promptly left it on the city bus upon arriving at my final stop. I was pretty bummed out and then I saw this and went to bed with a smile on my face.

I look forward to eating great bbq.

Videos: Bright Eyes + Titus Andronicus (Milwaukee)

Posted on Monday 4 April 2011

“…the power of songs like “Old Soul Song” and “Road To Joy,” which utterly brought the house down. But his most effective moment was the set closer, “Lua.” Featuring Oberst alone on acoustic guitar and a couple of Walcott horn solos, it was the simplest reminder of the stark beauty of Bright Eyes’ songs.” – AV Club Milwaukee

“…but opening act Titus Andronicus threatened to steal the show, heating up the crowd within seconds with spirited, take-no-prisoners punk. At one point, frontman Patrick Stickles climbed the speakers to the balcony to lead an exuberant crowd clap-along. His antics inspired throngs in the pit to push and shove and launch crowd surfers up to the stage. Shakespeare this definitely wasn’t, but you couldn’t ask for a more thrilling way to start a show.” – Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
