5 Questions with Hayden

Posted on Wednesday 24 September 2008

Hayden’s In Field & Town is a favorite around MoB HQ. You definitely won’t want to miss his upcoming appearance at Cafe Montmartre on Saturday, September 27th.

Could you lend some information on the recording process of In Field & Town? Where and how was it recorded, and were there any lessons learned that you’ll apply towards future recording sessions?

Half was recorded North of Toronto, and half in the City. I did most of it myself, bringing in certain musicians to lend their talents when I had trouble filling certain holes myself. I could say I learned a lot, but I’ll probably make the same mistakes the next time around.

The internet has dramatically altered the way artists can reach an audience. With things like blogs/myspace/etc, what are your thoughts on the power of the internet in terms of helping (or hurting) your music?

I think that the internet is helping certain artists. No matter what, there will always be great musicians that are ignored and weak musicians that are praised.

What was the last show you went to see as a fan?

Cuff the Duke at The Horeshoe Tavern in Toronto.

What is on your bookshelf at the moment? Any books you’ve read over the past year that you’d recommend?

I’m in the middle of a book called “What you have left” by Will Allison. He gave it to me at a show in New York. It’s beautifully written. It’s actually so sad at times I need space from it.

I got to ask about the video for “Where & When.” Whose idea was it to create a video that looked and felt like a regular contribution to YouTube? Did you really receive negative feedback from it as you described in the Two Girls, One Bed Reactions video?

I’ve never received such a reaction to a video before. We all thought it was more goofy than sexy, but the comments youtube veiwers left were disgusting. It was as if we showed it to inmates that just got out of solitary confinement.
